Everything was quiet.

Peaceful.

Dark.

Numb.

...Tingling, now.

Ringing, beeping, flashing.

The tingling faded, and a deep ache settled in Undyne's bones. The quiet rustling of blankets and the strident beeping of a machine found their way into her finned ears.

She opened her eyes, or rather the one that would obey when she tried. The other one was bandaged and felt raw and gritty, like something was missing there, but she'd worry about that later.

The light around her was dim and blurry, but it still sent a stab of pain through her fuzzy head. Undyne looked around for the source of it, and beside the machine keeping tabs on her soul, she found a familiar glowing pink anime figure sitting on the small table next to her.

Alphys' bedside table.

Alphys' tiled, poster-covered walls.

Alphys' Mew Mew Kissy Cutie quilt.

Alphys' bed.

What the hell was she doing in Alphys' bed?

And...

Why was Alphys herself sleeping on the floor, surrounded by empty cups of instant ramen, laptop playing some muted anime that lit up the dark bags under her eyes?

As tired as she could tell the scientist was, Undyne needed answers. She vaguely remembered passing out, and being swamped with relief from some long-gone burning pain, but her half-asleep mind was struggling to dredge up any useful information.

Including, apparently, the fact that she had a broken leg and some sort of stab wound in her stomach.

Undyne tried to stand up and almost fell off the edge of Alphys' upstairs living area before she managed to get her good leg under her and slump back onto the bed, waiting for the fireworks crackling through her body to slowly fizzle out.

She still felt terribly dizzy, but she managed to shuffle over to Alphys' side, quietly whispering her name.

"Alphys?"

The lizard gave a protesting murmur, shifting slightly in her sleep. Undyne caught herself thinking how cute her...friend...was and felt a purple blush coating her cheeks. Ugh, no! She doesn't think of you like that. Stay focused, the taller woman thought.

"Alphys."

With a firm shake of her shoulder, the scientist's eyes opened blearily. She squinted at Undyne for a moment before letting out a startled noise and jumping to her feet.

"U-undyne?! Wh- you- you're awake?!"

"Well, yeah, but why have I been sleeping in your bed? What happened?" the fish woman asked, raising the eyebrow that didn't hurt to move.

"I- I- oh, god- what's the time-" Alphys fumbled for her phone and almost dropped it again when she saw the screen.

"Is...something wrong?" Undyne inquired.

Alphys paused, and replied hesitantly, "Y-you've been unconscious f-for two days, Undyne. I've b-been here m-monitoring you for a-a while, but a-apparently I f-fell asleep, uh-"

Undyne cut her off. "Two DAYS?! How the hell did that happen? And how did I get here? Last I remember everything was orange, and...grey...I guess I must have been bleeding...and..."

Her good eye widened.

"Red..."
