Miriam was the usual 13 year old girl living in Toronto. Boy crazed, wears baggy clothing, more or less very hyperactive. Yet one thing keeps her from the others. A disease separating her from everyone else.
The Hanahaki disease is a disease where a flower blooms within your lungs and grows more, obscuring your breathing. Common reasons of such a disease is one sided love, you are in love with a person but said person does not love you back. When the person does not love you back but you are deeply attached to them a flower starts to bloom within your lungs, you start to cough up flower petals until you die from lack of oxygen. It is possible to remove it though, that is if you want to revoke all romantic feelings by surgery.
The young braided girl was hunched over the toilet seat, shaking as sweat dripped down her forehead and her mouth filled with flower petals. She let out a groan and puked more out, revealing drops of blood and green rose petals drifted upon the basin water, she clutched her stomach . She was in pain, she can't do much sports with this disease, she can't even think of Mei without violently coughing out more flower petals.
Mei...A mental image of her flashed into Miriam's mind. Her new red hair, dorky smile, out burst of energy, positivity placed in such hard work, and kindness. How could she not fall in love with her? It was weird to have..."feelings" for your best friend but if you're in her shoes you would know why.
Suddenly another wave of blood and flowers burst out of the teenagers mouth, she was crying at this point, as saliva dripped down her chin. She needed to control this. She can't walk around coughing up flower petals. Not to mention it was Green Rose petals.
She stood up and flushed the toilet, taking a deep breath, before unlocking the stall door. No one else was in the bathroom, it was lunch time and everyone was out in the courtyard, she ran the tap water and washed her hands. The blood water running down the sink and down the drain, she started wiping her face. Washing off any traces of tears and blood. She looked at herself in the mirror, it was...her. It was her, staring at her green eyes, yet something was off. She was more shaken, yes...frightened...heart broken? I mean, if you're someone with a disease where you can literally catch it when your crush literally doesn't like you, then she can say she IS heart broken and despite accepting the fact Mei would never love her back she still clings on.
It was unbearable, every day she has to deal with hiding this disease from others while also dealing with a one sided love relationship. A love that would never be said out loud to anyone else. Miriam was well aware of the side effects of this disease, she could get hallucinations or even die, but it was more worth it than losing attraction to anyone.
She would rather die right now than deal with no attraction and let Mei know her useless love.
