"Spence come on, we're gonna be late!" My friend Michael says, trying to wake me up.
"5 more minutes." I say as I throw a pillow at him.
"Your meeting is literally in 20 minutes and it takes 15 to get there, not even adding traffic." He says
"Fine" I say rolling out of the bed.
He walks out of the room and I get dressed. Today I'm meeting with a record company, Big Loud Records, to get a job as a songwriter. Songwriting has always been a gift of mine and I'm finally being given the shot to show people what I can do.
"Are you ready?" Michael asks.
"Yeah, let's go."
We get in his truck and he drives us to Big Loud.
"Wish me luck." I say when we get there
"you don't need it." He says giving me a comforting smile.
I get out and walk inside, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and I bumped into someone, making them drop their things.
"I'm so sorry" I say helping the guy up.
"Don't worry about it, darlin." He says sweetly.
I help him get his things and he says "I'm Morgan. Do you work here?"
"No, I'm actually on my way to a meeting right now. If they like what they see I'll have a job then." I say
"You a songwriter?" He asks intrigued.
"Yep. Been writing songs since I was in middle school. It's always been gift of mine." I say smiling.
"Well, good luck in there..." He paused because he still hadn't heard my name.
"Spencer" I say
"Ah, We'll good luck in there Spencer." He says smiling.
"Spencer Averman?" A woman asks
"That's me." I say
"Seth is ready for you now." She's says
I look at Morgan one last time and he smiles sweetly at me. I follow the woman and go into the office she lead me to.
"Hello Spencer." Seth says
"Hello, nice to meet you." I say shaking his hand.
"So you're here because you want a job as a songwriter, correct?"
"Yes sir." I say
"Do you have any samples with you that I could read?" He asks
"Yes, right here." I say handing him two papers.
"So we have 'Good Girl' and 'American Nights' " Seth says as he reads the names of the two papers I gave him.
We sat in comfortable silence while he read one of the songs.
"This is great." He says as he's reading "American Nights"
He reads the other song and says "These are both great songs, I'd love to see these hit the charts." Seth says smiling at me.
"Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words." I say
"Spencer, you're hired." Seth says as he stands up.
"Thank you so much. I appreciate this opportunity more than you will ever know." I say shaking his hand again.
"I have a singer in mind for American Nights, I can give him a call right now and we can go to the studio. Sound good with you?" He asks
"That's perfect. Thank you so much." I say once again.
He calls someone and then we both head to the recording studio, and I see him. Morgan. His beautiful blue eyes and his sweet smile.
"Morgan, this is our newest songwriter, Spencer." Seth says.
"You got the job?" Morgan asks, happily.
"Yeah, I did." I say grinning
"Congratulations"
"You two know each other?" Seth asks
"Just met before the meeting actually" Morgan says.
"Spencer wrote a song and I think you'd be the perfect fit for it." Seth says handing the paper to Morgan.
"I really like this. You sure you want me to sing this Spencer?" He asks
"Yes. Your voice can't be any worse than mine." I joke.
"Well, if your voice is anything like you then it must be beautiful." He says making me blush.
He gets in the booth and starts singing my song.
Blue ribbon bottles, big block throttles
Marlboros if you want 'em
Go on and take a drag
A little small town freedom
A little taste of dreamin'
No need to preach
No need to shout, we believe in
American nights, wanted alive
Cuttin' down Main St. in the dark
Muscle shoals, muscle cars
Earnin' our stripes underneath these stars
Faded Levi's, worn out Chucks
20 in my pocket, feels like a million bucks
Blue-eyed beauty, lean in to me
Our own show in the back row
Miss the whole damn movie
American nights, wanted alive
Cuttin' down Main St. in the dark
Muscle shoals, muscle cars
Earnin' our stripes underneath these stars
American nights
American nights
American nights
Pray the morning don't come
These colors don't run
Stay up and stay young
American nights
American nights, wanted alive
Cuttin' down Main St. in the dark
Muscle shoals, muscle cars
Earnin' our stripes underneath these stars
American nights
American nights
American nights
Pray the mornin' don't come
Stay up and stay young"Oh my God" I say when he finishes the song.
"You didn't like it?" Morgan asks
"No, I loved it. You are perfect for the song." I say making him grin from ear to ear.
"Now that we have this demo, we are gonna need to make one for your other song tomorrow. I'll see if I can find a singer to do it." Seth says.
"Yes, of course. I can't wait." I say and Seth leaves.
"I know we just met but I was wondering if you'd like to have dinner with me tonight. You deserve to do a little celebrating." Morgan says.
"I'd love to. I'll send you my address." I say
"I'll pick you up at 8." He says grinning.
I walk outside and see Michael waiting for me.
"How did it go?" He asks when I get in the truck.
"Um, it went..." I acted like I was sad so I could surprise him.
"I'm sorry Spence. That guy is an idiot to not see your talent."
"IT WENT GREAT." I yell, making him jump.
"Shit" He says after I yell.
"Don't be a baby." I laugh
"I'm proud of you Spence. I knew you could do it."
Michael takes me home and I start getting ready for my date with Morgan.
