Despite the harsh rush of adrenaline we felt, Bennett leaping through the snow like a frog was a nice change of pace. Startled, I jerked my head back at the sound of slow crunching. Lieutenant. Marshall had aimed his gun, shooting a menacing glare as his hands shook uncontrollably. Cursing to himself, the Lieutenant dropped his arm and returned inside. presumably to get gloves. In the not so far distance, a large port perched on the edge of a snowy beach. Clearing thick mist was the largest 'creature' I had ever seen. Larger than me, larger than the lieutenant, larger than the orphanage! Gliding across the sea with ease, it created a wary aura. All sorts of strange machinery had been packed onto this thing. It was a warship, adorned with a monochrome pallet threatening us to our core. I looked down at Bennet. Bennet peered up at me. Taking my chances, I thanked Bennet before standing on my own two feet.
The pain of frosted toes was numbed my poor teeth, gritting against each other violently. Taking Bennets hand once again, we sprinted, though he dragged me along a feeling of impending doom, had arose once again in the pits of my stomach. Bennets eyes were glued to the ship, like a tiger to its prey. He never blinked, not even once. All his focus was fixated on by a potential saviour. My eyes were had been watching something else. Or rather someone else.
Lieutenant. Marshall had returned, hands on his knees, panting for air. I was right. Ink black gloves were loosely tied to his hands with a thin string. His signature boots left large prints in the snow. A death glare those empty eyes of his. Once again he raised his gun, eerily steady. Once again I ran for my life. But not just mine, Bennet's too.
As our feet hit the port, the boat had too, a few curious soldiers glared down at us with suspicion. BANG. A hole. There was a hole next to my foot in the port. Panicking, I had become a statue, as if not moving made it any harder for the gun to hit me. BANG. BANG. Two. Two shots were fired back, from the deck. One of them impaling Lieutenant. Marshall in the leg. A life wrenching screech rang in My ears for a while. It was followed with complex curses and a final shot, aimed at Bennet this time. Dragging him with my hand, I yanked Bemnet out of the way, causing the lone bullet to dive into the sea. BANG. Another distressing cry came from the lieutenant and this time, I didn't watch. Miss. Baldwin, the woman who had just killed the lieutenant, surprisingly had some sympathy. Lowering her gun, she strode from the deck to the entrance at the side. The door opened and a cheap ladder acted as stairs for Miss. Baldwin.
Miss. Baldwin looked both me and Bennet up and down, deducting that we couldn't be spies because of the scene that just took place. Plus we were petrified. Horrified out of our minds.
"This way." She soothed, more than a few hints of sympathy in her voice. I just stared at her though, nothing coming out of my mouth. I couldn't even cry. Bennet took a quivering step towards the ship, tears already scattered on his face.
"Go on." She wasn't any more impatient and let us take our time to get on the boat.
"Keeps your guns down" Miss. Baldwin paused. scrutinising the orphanage, "Investigate the suspicious building those two came from." She orderedWhen Miss. Baldwin finally returned onto the boat, she led Me, Bennet and a few other children from the orphanage to her Soliers doorms. Sorrow deep in her face, she took of her hat and bowed.
"Your friends were taken by another boat...I am sorry." Miss. Baldwin announced. I got the picture, even if I didn't know what the word 'boat' meant. The other got the message too, our heads hung low, tears slipping to the floor. We were a choir of sobers. It's been years since then. I live in The land of Paix now, I attend school and I get good grades. Bennet is my best friend. We vowed to never forget what happened to us back in kleos.
The people. Our friends. We'll miss them.I'll make sure never to forget them, ever.
