It's been almost two years since I've seen Park. I belong to him. Sometimes I wonder if it's not too late to go back. I open a drawer in my room, filled with envelopes and small packages. All of them are unopened. I pull some out. I decide to open one. It's a letter and a picture of Park is tapped to it. I feel a pang of pain in my heart. I read the letter.
Dear Eleanor,
I understand that you probably won't write back. But just in case you ever read this, I want to tell you that I love you so much. I still have hope that I will see you again someday. Just incase you forgot, that picture is just from a month ago. So you have a newer picture. I miss you, I miss your freckles, red curly hair, your glowing pale skin. Your attitude and jokes. And don't forget about that time you PROMISED to go to prom with me this year. If you read this, please write back.
Love,
ParkThe next thing I know I am sobbing and hugging the picture to my chest. He still cares, he loves me. I must be sobbing too loud because my uncle comes in.
"Eleanor? What's wrong?" He asks
"I-I miss Park..." I say, he already knows about Park.
"I know Eleanor, I know. Maybe you can call him? Now that I think about it, why haven't you called him all this time?" He says.
"I'll call him. I still have his phone number memorized." I say.
"Come here." He says. I follow him to the phone on the wall. (This takes place in 1988) I dial his number. It rings docs times and then it picks up.
"Hello, this is Park speaking." I hear Park say.
"I miss your voice so much." Is the first thing I say.
I here clanging in the background.
"Eleanor?" Park says.
"Park?" Eleanor says.
"Why haven't you called me? Or written back?" He asks anxiously.
"Uh... I don't know... I'm sorry." I say
"I miss you so much." He says.
"I miss you too." I choke back a sob.
"When can I see you again?" He asks hesitantly.
"Whenever you can."
"During Spring break?" He asks.
"Do you actually think you can come?"
"I'm asking my parents right now."
"I'll call you back Eleanor ok?"
"Ok."
Wow. Did that really just happen. Will I be able to see Park again?
"Can Park come to visit during Spring Break? I ask my uncle Geoff.
"Well, ok. As long as you get the homework done too."
I smile and hug him tightly.
"Thanks." I say, right when the phone starts ringing. I pick it up.
"Park?" I say
"I will see you in four days."
My heart skips a beat. "Really?" I ask
"Really. I can't wait for you to get mad at me and kiss me." He says, this annoys me a bit, but I let it pass.
"I'll see you in four days then." I say and we say goodbye and the call ends. Were we really meant to be?
I look in the mirror. I work out, not a lot, but I've gotten down two sizes. And I actually have a working bra, plenty actually. I don't go to bed starving and afraid that I might be killed in my sleep. Because I'm far far away from Richie. I flinch when I feel something lick my foot.
"Hi, Sammy! Ahh good boy! Wanna treat?" I say in a baby voice. I scratch behind my dog's ears. He's a red healer. The sweetest dog anyone could ever ask for. With cute pointy ears and big brown eyes. He wags his tail. He is almost as happy and excited as me.
