Zombie's (book 1 of 3)

After party...

The voices become less intense as each walker finally meets their maker. My head begins to clear some, I can think clearer now. Kane slides his gun into his holster on his belt. Thimble and Kaydence do the same with the guns they hold, putting the rest of the weapons in the bag with spare ammo and knifes. They begin to pack up camp, I just sit and stair at the display before me... i'm shocked and appalled that the group just lashed out at the walkers. At the children... I could have helped. It rings over and over in my head like a ton of drums. Bringing my knees up to my chest i stare and stare. Silently telling myself that it will be fine, that it won't happen again. I know that it's not true, but it's all i can do to hold myself together.

"Winter... were heading out." Kane touches my shoulder and kneels by me when I don't speak or move.

"Winter? Are you alright?"

i don't say anything for a few minutes. It's just silent. Looking at him in the eyes i speak.

"you didn't have to kill them." He looks at me in shock. "what do you mean? They are deadly Winter they can't just roam around the earth, more innocent people will die if they aren't stopped. you know this"

I shake my head in protest to his comment. Thimble and Kaydence stand by listening.

"You forgot about it didn't you. You forgot about me...."

"winter I have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't forget about you, I kept you safe all three of us did!" he rakes his hand through his hair, he always does when he's mad or stressed.

"No you did, all three of you did. They didn't mean us any harm. All they wanted to do was pass through and we were in the way. That's what I tried to tell you, that's why I woke you all up. So we could move. Kane, they cry out in pain. Every walker that is killed near me is a connection. You know this. I see things that you guys don't... and it's painful every time. They are fearful, the walkers don't understand what's happening to them. I saw it i saw what they saw. That's why you shouldn't kill them. That's why I don't kill them."

"Winter- he pauses- I, I'm sorry i just assumed that they wanted to eat us. Take us down. I sorry that we caused you pain. From now on, you tell us if they are going for the kill or not. You understand them, so you make the calls alright, my little Zombie hunter?" he nudges my side with his elbow as he smiles. i can't help but smile back.

"Alright... Alpaca boy." He grins as i call him this.

'Alpaca boy? Really? I guess I can deal."

Thimble chimes in as Kane and I eye each other."Alright Love birds. I don't want to see any PDA in my vision, could give me nightmares. Gee, you to make me almost want to barf. Flirt on your own time would you? Let's get a move on while the day is young." Her a Kaydence begin to walk down the dirt road. Kane pulls me to my feet and we follow Thimble. She's the one who navigates. Apparently she knows a place we can set up a more stable base. I just hope it's not crawling with Walkers. My head might explode.

Thimble leads us to a fork in the road, she stops and looks both ways for a moment deciding on the route we should take. Left, we had to go left? maybe it's not as bad as i think it is. We migrate further down the tared road, full of pot holes and splintered wood from trees nearby. It's an airily silence, the type of silence that spooks you and makes you paranoid beyond all reason. Something isn't right about this route.... It's not safe.

Run! Winter you have to run get your friends out of this zone. It's not safe. Go! Run, Run now!!!

who said that? My head darts in every direction. Who's speaking to me?

Winter, My name is unknown to you at the moment but we will meet soon enough. You have to trust me if you want your friends to live. You must run and head south, then take a right up north when you come to the bridge pass of the main river. Don't fear me, i won't hurt you. i'm a friend, unknown, but still a friend. Do as i say and your group will survive. Now run!!!

Something inside me tells me to listen, another part tells me to ignore the weird voice in my head. some how i trust the voice speaking to me. The female says kind words, encouraging in a way. who and what is this thing, this person? with out further hesitation i spring into action.

"Run! We have to run!" i shout towards my friends. My heart skips a beat from pure adrenaline pulsing through my system. Kane looks at me. "do you sense something?"

"Not exactly.... something like that. Trust me it's not safe. WE have to run and run now!" I start to sprint in the direction we came from. My lungs begin to burn as my friends follow and the path seems to never end. Just a clearing that's all we need is the clearing. some long strides later the end of the road comes into focus. We reach to fork in the road once more. cautiously but swiftly, I clasp both hands together and place them, palm down, on top of my head. My breathing gradually slows down as i walk South. I must walk south is all i can think as my friends shout questions at me. Kane grabs my arm as I walk, I violently snatch it back. Kane, i'm sorry but you can't touch me. not now. I think towards him. Obviously he can't get that direct message but I hope my body language clarifies that i need to be in my own bubble. I can't share. Kane falls back with the other two as we walk. They whisper among themselves, i just ignore the giggles and tiny noises. I keep going. I just keep going south as I was directed.
