One name changed my life for the better. He was only a boy when he found him, Dutch Van Der Linde, the leader of the Van Der Linde boys, his dark black slick hair was almost to his shoulders, but not quite. Brown eyes, like dirt, not the nice kind. This story is indeed not about that awful man. It's about Arthur Morgan, who met Mr. Van Der Linde just around the age of 14. Both parents were dead, his mother was killed by an illness, and his father was executed by the Pinkertons in front of his eyes. You'll learn more about them soon. Sad story but, he doesn't talk about it much so I guess it doesn't bother him, or maybe it does... It would be years of learning, riding, hunting until he could be on his own, but for the most part, he stuck around, I mean what do you expect, he was only 14 and had no place to go.
My momma passed away a long time ago. I don't remember much about her, she was shot dead when I was just 2 years old. Some bad business my daddy was in is the reason she's dead. Daddy never forgave himself. Momma didn't like it. I can understand why, it brought them both to their death. My daddy left me, never came back. I've heard some stuff about him up in town but I have no interest in meeting him. My aunt raised me. My momma's sister. Her name was Cathrine Ross. Most people round these parts have a raspy voice, even I do, but she did not. She was a wonderful woman. Even though she wasn't very wealthy, she still took me in. I'm a lucky gal to have someone like that. She taught me all the basic skills; hunting, reading, and writing. She passed when I was 17. Tuberculosis. Not much to my life other than that. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention my name. I got one of those common names, at least common round here. I go by Nelly, but it really is Ellen Ross. One of the reasons I never tried to start trouble on the small farm we had, was because I didn't like hearing it come out of my aunt's mouth. I really hated the name, still do actually.
Im 26 now, life isn't so boring anymore. Most of what I do is kill the men my daddy ordered around and bounties. It's how I make my money. I live in a camp with my buddies near Annesburg. I'm the only girl. Three other guys, The reverend, Christian, he's not my favorite. Then there's Callith, he's more like me, me and him like to go out and hunt while Chrisitan does all the business stuff. I don't know much about what he does, just know that it's good and gets us money. It rains all the time, camp is always soaked. Were working on gettin' our own ranch. Obviously, I cannot do that myself. I met Calith when I was 19, I was just getting my first horse for myself to move west. Chris waltzed in and brought the most beautiful horse I've ever seen, his name now is Eric. ... I've been writing for a while now, I should head to bed, gotta lot of things ahead of me tomorrow.
