Black Panther was a widely movie popular that grossed over 1.334 billion USD. My guess is that it's because the majority of the cast were black actors and the film was directed by a black director; 2 things that Marvel definitely took too long to finally do.
Being black myself, I can confirm that this movie undoubtedly did its job. The way that Marvel glorified black culture was pretty extraordinary. The idea of Wakanda was incredible, but what I really loved was how they still stuck to tradition even though they were privileged enough to have everything that they had. There was no shortage of strong female characters such as Shuri, Nakia, and Okoye, which in my opinion, stole the show. I, for one, was super proud to be black after watching it.
So what was the problem?
Black Panther should have been an origin movie. I say should because I couldn't help feeling that this movie was not really about T'challa. There are two main villains, Claw, and Killmonger. I really loved the parts with Killmonger, I totally thought that he was a perfect villain, no complaints there. However, I felt that Klaw shouldn't have been killed the way he was.
Back to the part about origin movies, it is more than okay for them to have representation and strong female characters, as long as they don't clash with the main storyline! This was the problem. Black Panther was more a story about Wakanda, and not the Black Panther. In fact, having two Black Panthers made it worse. It may have been cool, yes, but it really didn't help the storyline. At all.
Black Panther was the very first Marvel Movie I watched. At the end I was thinking: yeah, that was cool. Not: Omg, that was one of the best movies I have ever seen and I must watch the rest of them ASAP. Black Panther didn't really do its job to draw me into MCU, as most Marvel films have after I watch them. Over and Over.
I'm not saying that Black Panther was bad, in fact I would give the movie a solid 3 stars. I'm just saying that with everything that happened, yeah it was cool, but it still wasn't really about the Black Panther.
I'm hoping that with the new Black Panther movie that is set to come out in November, it will be more focused on the new Black Panther's origin story, as Marvel has announced that Shuri will be taking on the title of the Black Panther. Also, as revealed in the mid-post credits scene, Wakanda has recently made known to the world its presence. I'm curious as to how the world plans to react...
(Also, did anyone else make the connection about how Black Panther ended like Iron man?)
Marvel has given itself somewhat of a second chance. Although the first Black Panther movie was widely successful, it's possible that the second movie could be subject to some "tough sequel syndrome," something that many Marvel movies have been prone to. I do sincerely hope that this is not the case however, and that its sequel will far surpass my expectations.
