Elizabeth: about 25 years old with long curly chestnut hair and lots of it. She alternates between muslin dresses and cowboy clothes. She has a sunburned nose half the time, lots of freckles and intelligent hazel eyes. She isn't afraid to use her pistol. She grew up on a ranch with her widowed father and as an only child, he raised her like a boy. She can hunt, trap and shoot as well as any man. She also fell in love with horses and learned everything there is to know about them. She has a deep connection with them because most people regard her with suspicion so she turns to animals. She's never been in love and is afraid of being trapped in marriage. She's also afraid of appearing "weak" so when she gets with a man she doesn't pursue it further. Freedom is more important to her than marriage. Her dad taught her to be free and now that he's passed, she likes to honor his memory by being as liberated as he taught her.
Duke: is about 27 years old. He's a free spirit who does what he likes when he likes. And with his tall stature and blazing blue eyes. He's handsome enough to get away with doing what he wants. He's been a horse trader since he was a teenager since his parents could no longer support him. He's passionate. He loves women but doesn't have a lot of time for them with his business. Anyway, he wants a strong woman who can stand up to him, not a lady who will faint at the sight of tavern brawl. He's a tough guy, a bit hard on the outside but with a secret sense of humor and a tender side that's even more deeply buried. He hasn't been able to be vulnerable his whole life and he's resistant to showing that side of him.
