Sheila remembered things when she blacked out, small little details like being out of a party or into a bedroom to sober up. She vividly remembered how she got the handprints on her wrist and ribs from Nate dragging her home then slamming her into a wall so he could lecture her about how lucky she was that he covered for her so she could see me during her weekend with her father. If he found out we were hanging out, it would be a shitshow, a custody battle all over again. Which is why waking up in her bedroom with very little recollection of the party after the altercation with Jules wasn't surprising at all. Neither was the phone call from her father.

"Did you get to your mother's safely, mija?"

"Good morning to you too, Daddy."

Sheila would never say it out loud but she hated her father. He was very obviously sleeping with Cal Jacobs every Thursday at some trashy motel when he lectured his own daughter about how adultery and sex before marriage was a sin. He also thought his daughter hurt herself for attention. "You're running late. Nate is waiting for you outside of her house."

"Okay..."

"And Sheila... don't make a scene this year. Don't cause any trouble. Tell your mother I said hello. And thank Nathaniel for getting you home last night." Sheila let out a groan, "He's good for you, mija. Have fun at school but not too much fun."

He made a long mental checklist of the things he liked and disliked about women. He liked tennis skirts and jean cut-offs, but not the kind so short you could see the pockets. He liked ballet flats and heels. He hated sneakers and dress shoes. What was fine with sandals, as long as they were worn with a fresh pedicure. He liked thigh gaps, hated cankles. He liked tan lines, long necks, slender shoulders. He liked good posture and fruit-scented body mist. He liked full lips, and small noses. He liked chokers, but the lacy ones with flower cutouts or delicate patterns.

Sheila's style included all of the things he liked but it was the mismatched non color coordinated outfits that didn't quite fit her that made him disgusted. When Nate picked her up in the morning, hoping she'd at least try to look his definition of presentable and bashed her being "still dressed like a fucking dyke."
