Although many may argue it, the Bible is still living and active. It has been proven, even in the secular community, that it is more accurate to its original manuscript than any other text. This is because it is the word of God. While God did use 40 people to write it He provided the content. It is the only book with divine authority because it is the word of God.
There are 66 books in the bible and it is split into two parts, the old testament, and the new testament. It is written in many styles and perspectives but is dived into chapters and verses. The verses, or numbers marking each sentence group, were only put in within the past 500 hundred years to make navigating the word easier.
Many times people view verses in singularity, not taking into context the culture and audience of the time. It is important to read the surrounding verses to get a good grasp of what God really intended it to say.
Sadly the bible has been misused in many ways. Whether that is attacking certain people groups or customs, people have used it to spark division and pain. People have bent the word to be used for their own advances and not Gods. But let me tell you this is not God, the truth, or what the bible is meant to be used for.
Peter 1:20-21 "Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."
The bible is a weapon, one meant to break the chains of sin and pour truth into our lives. It is meant to show us God's stay and his character. Whether it is how God saved the Israelites from slavery, or the story of Jesus we can see his love, compassion, intentionality, etc.
Becuase scripture is the word of God it holds so much power. The words of scripture can move hearts. It shows us the truth, exposes our sins, and guides us to salvation.
2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
Proverbs 30:5 "Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him."
Psalm 119:130 "; it imparts understanding to the simple."
Psalm 119:9-10 "How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands."
John 8:32 "and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear."
Isaiah 40:8 "Grass dries up, and flowers wither, but our God's word will last forever."
Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
The bible is not long boring or dated, it is an exciting tale about creator and creation, a fall but then salvation, a story of perfect relentless love.
Where should I start?
The bible doesn't have to be read cover to cover. I suggest starting with the new testament gospels called Matthew, Mark, Luke, And John.
