"I'm here" he texts me...
I get up from my bed an put on my converse. Going down the stairs I can already hear the music from his car, I can already feel his presence. I open the door. He is leaning against the car, windows wide open and the music is blasting. He blows out the smoke from his cigarette and smiles at me. "My girl" by the temptations is playing. Is he trolling me?
"Thought I'd wake up your neighbors from their afternoon nap" he says
"You know you look straight out of a movie» I tell him
"Ooh...what movie?" he throws his cigarette to the ground and follows me to the passenger seat to open my door
"An old one" I say as I get in
Its six in the afternoon, there is total silence in my neighborhood and a slightly cold breeze
He gets into the driver's seat and then turns to me "high school musical maybe"
"Sure, although that's more like an insult"
He laughs. He kisses my cheek.
"Sooo, what are we doing today?" I say as I put on his sunglasses
"As if you don't know"
We talked about wanting to watch the sunset together and guessing from the time he came to pick me up I kind of know where this is going...
"Good thing you brought these sunglasses then" I tell him
"You look hot" he teases
I rest my hand on his neck. He puts his on my thigh.
...
"Miss you" by the rolling stones Is playing
"Do you have an actual spot you are taking me to or are we just going to drive around?" I ask him "you know I'm down for either I'm just asking"
We are driving through sunflower fields. The sun is giving me a headache, the kind you get when you are having a good time.
"No, I do have a spot" he laughs "I came here with my cousin once or twice to hung out with her and her friends fucking ages ago"
He makes a right turn and we are now driving up a mountain.
He disconnects the aux cord from my phone and puts it on his.
"Hey hey don't pull this shit on me" I tell him. He gives me a side eye.
"fine" I give in and he smiles like he won this one with his charm. To be fair...he did just win with his charm. "See I can't even get mad when you do that cause you are probably going to put on some good ass song" I admit.
"true" he replies
He chooses "Gold dust woman" by Fleetwood mac which he knows I love
I lean over him and press the button that rolls all the windows down at once
"You know the song calls for it" we smile into each other's faces
He's got one hand on the wheel the other in my thigh and now his finger is dancing to rhythm of the song and I'm trying really hard to keep it together
We are both singing along to the words, him more than me-since I'm deeply insecure about my voice-and sometimes if we stare at each other for too long I have to remind him to keep his eyes on the road or we'll hit a car
...
I think it's this one" he says
"It looks about right"
He pulls over and we get out of the car
"Ooh right on time"
"On time for what?" I ask, obviously playing dumb about the sunset thing
He pretends to slap me but I skillfully avoid his fake punch and instead lean in for a kiss
The cliff is overlooking the sunflower fields we previously passed through and I want to cry because of how pretty it is.
"Come sit here"
I turn and I see him seating on the hood of his car
The music from the car is still playing and the intense sunlight is hitting right in our faces forcing us to keep our eyes half shut
"I dressed in your favorite" he tells me
I notice he is wearing the t-shirt I complimented him on a few months ago
"I love the intention behind the shirt more than the shirt itself" I admit
He kisses my nose
"And I bought two bottles of red" I tell him
He pulls back "for real?"
"Yes, in the car"
"Hmmm...so...this is a real date. Like... a real, organized date and shit"
"The organized is pushing it"
"I mean that's just as organized as both of us can get"
"Yeah probably" we both laugh
"So maybe we should count it, you know as our first real dare"
"I'd like that" I say. I would never have thought of it like that had he not said it. What we have feels so certain and right that most of the technicalities of the relationship are implied. Some things we just know and don't speak about. But he is right. This is the first time we don't do something lowkey and private. This is a moment that I can already imagine as a memory
"Damn... THE first date" I say
"THE first date" he repeats
"Now I'm kinda nervous"
"Why? you are doing great so far", "I mean...you already remembered the wine" he validates me
The sun has started setting and the colors are melting into a warm pink and orange
"Too bad I can't drink since I'm driving" he says with a straight face, staring straight into the blinding afternoon light.
And for the first time I can't tell if he is being sarcastic or not.
