Chapter 9: There’s Always a Happy Ending!
Now a week later, the Jonas family are all at home, enjoying the brake off show life. Nick’s a lot better; however he is still bed-ridden. Caitlin is still there as well; his Mum believes that nothing can separate the two of them, as she says, ‘‘they stick together like glue, they act like two magnets; when one moves so does the other...’’. the two older brothers and Frankie have all been looking after Nick but have all been rejected numerous times.
‘‘Nick come on, you need to take this – you don’t want to go back to the hospital do you?’’ Caitlin asked, knowing she had won the argument. Nick was still weak but managing. He had improved a lot since the shooting and had left the hospitable yesterday. He no longer had an IV’s poking into his arms but he did have to take regular insulin shots and check his blood sugar a lot more often. At the moment Caitlin was busy trying to get Nick to take an Aspirin tablet. He has had a slight stomach ache since the day before he left the hospitable, but it wasn’t anything serious, just after affects from the gun shot wound.
“Oh but Caitlin, please, my stomach’s fine and besides you know I hate tacking tablets. Cait-” He was silenced as Cait shoved the tables in his mouth and gave him a glass of water.
“Now swallow before you choke. Don’t protest – it’s better for you in the long run.” After noting Nick’s shocked face, she began to feel guilty but then threw it aside as it is about his health. Nick swallowed the tablet and took a swig of the water, washing it down.
Nick sent a glare her way but she ignored it like it was nothing; it didn’t really mean anything as Nick could never stay mad at her for long, no matter what she did. He knew it, too. Replacing the glare with a genuine smile he sat up, with a bit of a struggle, and pushed himself up against the head board of his bed – they had flown home to Texas as soon as they had left the hospitable. Caitlin came with seeing as she was on summer brake for Uni.
“I know this is random, but what do you want to be when you’re older - your career. I never asked you, sorry.’’ Nick asked, truly curious as to what she was studying to be.
Caitlin began laughing then abruptly stopped and commented, “it’s ironic - I want to become a doctor, a surgeon maybe, or someone who specialises in diseases.’’ She smirked as the slight smile on Nick’s face dropped, his face was now blank.
“Seriously? I’m already starting to feel sorry for myself and you’re not even a doctor yet.’’ Nick joked, his face lighting with a small smile again.
Caitlin was silently jumping and screaming on the inside; he implied that they would be together for a long time which means that he really is serious about their relationship. Her faced wore an ear-to-ear smile, her eyes gleaming in the lightened room.
“Cait? I want to go to the lounge, do you think you could help me please?’’ Nick asked unsure whether she will even let him go. He stared into her eyes, watching the indecision in them, then – reluctantly – she nodded her head, standing up by his side to give him a shoulder to lean on.
As Nick slowly slung his feet over the edge of the bed and grabbed onto the hand Caitlin was offering, he stood up, successfully managing not to fall over. A small smile graced his face as they began to leave the bedroom and head to the lounge – living room.
On their way there he did falter in step a few times but managed to stay upright even though he felt so weak at the knees but hid it ever so well from her. The couple entered the lounge, taking in his surroundings, noting that his whole family was in there and had not noticed yet that they had entered. Frankie saw them first; his face lit up with a massive smile and he jumped off the couch, running towards Nick who was currently preparing himself for the amount of pressure that was about to be thrown on him.
