April had never heard Dwayne speak

April had never heard Dwayne speak. Unlike most of the other kids in their grade, she's lived in Albuquerque less than a year. Dwayne is believer in the philosophy of Fredrick Nietzsche, and he has taken a vow of silence until he achieves his dream of becoming a test pilot for the Air Force. April thought this was very admirable of him.

She had moved here with her mother in hopes of being able to participate in more prestigious pageants. Her mother was a former pageant girl and kind of lived vicariously through April. Which she didn't mind all that much, she's always been lower middle class and liked feeling fancy, and she was quite good at them as well. Once they moved here April needed a job, how else was she going to pay all those pageant fees. Her mom working doubles at the hospital wouldn't cover all of it. Thats when she met the Hoovers. Shortly after moving here, about a month before school started, April ran into sweet seven year old girl named Olive, who complemented her on her dress and crown after winning Miss Teen Albuquerque. Olive proceeded to ask April numerous questions about her dresses, and hair, and makeup before they were finally interrupted by Sheryl, Olive's mother. And after a bit more chatting Sheryl brought up how these pageants are so hard because she's a working mother who is constantly, and understandably, stressed. It just perfectly aligned that Sheryl was at her whits end and needed a babysitter right when April was looking for a job.

Those last few weeks of summer April would be at the Hoover house every week day helping Olive with her routine and watching her while the parents, Richard and Sheryl, worked and their mysterious son named Dwayne went to summer school. April was very intrigued by him and his dark shaggy hair. She was intrigued by the books he read and the music he listened to. Dwayne used to give her a passing smile when he would come home from summer school before returning to is room to blast Nirvana. April knew she didn't look the part but she was into the same stuff he was. She didn't blame anyone for stereotyping her, i mean if you saw a 15 year old girl wearing a sparkly halter top and a low-rise jean skirt with french tip nails would you think she was into rock and philosophy? Dwayne was nice to her cause she was kind and patient Olive, he definitely has a sweet spot for his sister and April noticed that. But Dwayne stopped smiling at her a few weeks after school started. April had no idea why. What had changed? Did she do something wrong? Well fine, if he didn't liker her whatever because it seemed that everyone else at school did. By the end of the first week April had been taken in by the popular girls when they learned she was a beauty queen. It wasn't just the girls either. Boys loved talking to her and every football player was dying to be her "friend."

April had consistently been around Dwayne all of freshman year. And although he had never uttered a single word to her she was enthralled by him. What was he thinking? She ached to know his every thought. She felt as though they'd be able to talk for hours. But she also felt he hated her. Sometimes she could swear she would catch him glaring at her when Josh from the football team would pester her at her locker. Or in the hallways when she would run into him, her heart would jump with excitement as she smiled at him when he met her gaze, just to be met with him swiftly darting his gaze at the floor. She knew he liked Nietzsche so she got a copy of 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' and would read it around him. Maybe that would get him to speak. It did not. But after she had finished it she noticed he had gotten a copy and would read it slouched in his desk in the back of class. Was he inspired by her, April thought? Was this his way of communicating? Maybe this was his way of saying "I notice you," or at least April hoped thats what he was doing. On the other hand she was self conscious, and assumed he thought she was some poser bimbo who was reading it to look smart.
