His mother had passed. Cancer. Stage 4. August was 6. The person he was closest to had gone, leaving him with an unloving father who was far more interested in drinking away his sorrows then caring for his son. So without the space to grieve August found peace in his own thoughts and comfort in silence. That was until Juliette took a seat beside him during elementary school, bombarding him with questions about himself that he didn't have the answers to, not that he could ever get a word in anyway.
"What's your favourite colour? Mines lavender!"
"Why are you called August? I'm named after my grandpa's sister."
"What job do your parents have? My dads a lawyer and my mums a solicitor. They're always busy so I live with my granny"

Initially he was annoyed at the girls presence and constant attempts to get him to talk to her, however observing her from the classroom window when he would sit indoors to eat lunch he noticed that she had no one to sit with and would wonder round the playground with her eyes scanning the other pupils games, hoping for an invite to play. She was much like him, yearning to fill the hole that the absence of parents created. Grieving the loss of affection and love that a child is meant to experience growing up.
So he accepted her company and became comfortable in the idea of having someone to call a friend throughout his schooling experience. That was until high school school began.

He was upset to have to leave Juliette, not knowing if he would see the girl again. He didn't tell her that however, his goodbye letting her sign his white polo shirt. The pink sharpie had stained his skin, the word 'I'll miss you August, thank you' not washing off in the shower for weeks. He had meant to ask her why she thanked him, but he didn't see her again that day, the 9th graders  getting to leave early on their final day.

Seeing her walking onto the playground brought back all of the memories of his time spent with Juliette. All the small things plagued his mind, not allowing him to cast his eyes away from her. From the way she tucked her hair behind her ears any time she was explaining something she was passionate about to the time she was making a daisy chain and wrapped his arms in the small flowers telling him it his birthday present. His birthday wasn't for another six months but he wouldn't tell her that.

"Hey AJ, what you staring at?" Blake asked hitting the back of August's head as he walked beside him along with three others. When moving to secondary August made friends quickly. First came Blake who sat next to August in his calculus class. Blake had gone to the same first school as both August and Juliette but they had never spoke until then.  Next came Caleb and Alec, they were best friends who had attached themselves on the back of Blake and as a result planted themselves into the group. Last was Mitchell, he didn't talk much but August liked that about him. The golden five as they were known would gain a lot of attention from their peers, specifically the girls.

August hadn't told anyone his full name, so chose an abbreviation of his full name. August Jenkins.  Insecurity had eaten away at him when his teacher called the register but he had managed to interrupt her in time to make sure no one knew his first name.

"Just checking out the newbies," he replied finally turning away from the girl who had failed to notice his stare.

"Did you see that Juliette girl I swear she's the one you use to sit with? Shame really she use to be attractive, guess some girls don't learn when to stop eating," Blake snickers, making the rest of the group chuckle along with him. August's hands clench at his sides wanting to wrap his fingers around Blake's throat and make him regret even mentioning her name. But he didn't. He kept on walking alongside them towards the bleachers.

"At least she's got the big tits going for her," Caleb joked grabbing at his chest and pretends he was the one with the boobs. Caleb had always been the joker, going over the top with his inappropriate gestures and mannerisms.

"Yeah but it doesn't count when they're fat, if she lost all the weight the tits would disappear," Alec said as he sat down on the bench.

"Yeah well you can't have it all," muttered Mitchell.

Authors note: can't tell if this is a really short chapter but I'm posting it anyways :) Next chapter is written I'm just editing it so will be out either later today or tomorrow.
