I got to his house in what seemed a matter of minutes.
I feverishly tried to remove my seatbelt and it wasn't budging. I had to tell myself to slow down. I finally removed it and headed for his front door, where he was already walking out.
"Mom will be home any minute and I have no clue where she is." He said.
"We will find her. Does she have her house key so you can lock up?" I asked him.
"She never leaves the house without her lanyard around her neck, so I assume she does."
"Alright, let's go." I pulled out of the driveway and headed towards the baseball diamond. Maybe she walked there.
"Wait a second, when I dropped her off today, it was pouring down raining. Where in the world would she walk to in this weather?" I asked.
"I don't know." Jaxon said quietly. It wasn't too dark outside yet, but it was getting that way.
We slowed up when we got close to the diamond. There sitting on the bleachers Sierra and Darcy. Tori was standing up facing them. They looked over as my headlights shined on their faces. Jaxon jumped out as I put the car in reverse.
"Where the hell have you been? You didn't even tell me you were leaving!" He said as he reached them.
"You're not my boss, Jax, and these are my friends. I didn't do anything wrong!" She exclaimed.
"Just get in the car." He said.
She got up and stomped towards my car. She looked up at me and I looked to the ground. I didn't know what to say. She got in the car and shut the door.
We all got back in and I seen Sierra shake her head and she and Tori got up and walked off.
"Jax, please don't tell Mom! I just went for a walk. Sorry I didn't tell you!" She started cry and I honestly felt bad for her.
I grabbed his hand and he looked at me for some sort of answer and I shook my head. I think he knew I was agreeing with her.
I pulled back up to the driveway and let them out. Jennifer must have just gotten home, so I didn't want to pry. I told him I'd call him later and headed home myself. I think deep down Darcy didn't think she did anything wrong and I agreed. I was just glad she was home safe.
***************
Mom had called and said she had to work late and Mark had to leave town for a day or two for a trial, so she said Mason and I needed to fend for ourselves for the night for dinner.
I walked in and seen that he was on the phone, so I didn't want to disturb him. I went to my room and texted Jaxon.
How are things?
He texted back almost immediately
Okay I guess, I didn't tell Mom. She's had a bad day at work.
Oh sorry. Is there anything I can do? I asked.
What are you doing tonight? He asked.
I told him my plans of just hanging out with Mason, maybe thought of ordering a pizza.
Do you want to come over. Maybe you can bring Darcy and she and I can have a heart to heart.
He agreed that would be good and said he'd let Darcy and his mom know and that they'd be there in a little bit.
I heard Mason moving around downstairs, so I figured he was off the phone.
"How's it going?" He asked as I walked in the kitchen. He was pouring himself a drink and asked if I wanted one.
"Not much, I guess. Mom called and said she and Mark both wouldn't be home for dinner, and I asked Jaxon and Darcy if they wanted to come over, maybe order a pizza? Does that sound good?
"I'm always up for pizza. Jaxon can check out my new video game." He said with a smile.
"Oh, Lord." I laughed and rolled my eyes. It would give me an opportunity to talk to Darcy on my own.
They showed up about an hour later. They were playing around as they walked up to the front door, so I assumed they had forgiven each other. We all decided on some pizza and hot wings for dinner, so I searched the counter for the coupon.
Darcy and Jaxon were in the living room talking to Mason, but Darcy looked super bored.
"Come on Darcy, let's go upstairs while we wait on the pizza." I told her.
Her eyes lit up and she jumped up immediately.
We walked up to my room and I ran to the bathroom really quick while she found a spot to sit down. My room had a bay window with a cushy bench to sit on and stare out the window if you wanted to.
I walked out after I washed my hands and sat in the window with her.
"So, what happened today? That's not like you Darcy to take off without letting Jaxon know." I asked.
"He was in his room and comes and goes as he pleases. I just wanted to go for a walk. I like Sierra and Tori and I just want to make friends."
"But, they seem cruel to you at times." I said.
"They also apologized for it. I don't want to stay mad at my friends here. I don't have many. I had so many in Oklahoma, I just want them here."
I could understand where she was coming from. "Well, just be you and don't change to fit in. But, Darcy, at least let people know where you're going, so they don't assume the worst."
I seen the headlights of the pizza delivery guy pull into the driveway.
We walked downstairs and Mason paid for the pizza and wings and we all sat in the living room on the floor.
I think the little talk she and I had may work and she will be more thoughtful of her brother and mom from now on. At least I hoped so. I was a bit worried about the party in a few days, but if her mom was okay with it, her brother and I would have to be too.
We all sat and watched TV for a little bit and Jaxon said they needed to be headed home. I walked them out, kissed him goodbye and gave Darcy a hug. Everyone seemed as if this afternoon never happened.
I walked upstairs to get my PJs on and waited for Jaxon to let me know they got home safe. My phone rang and I looked at the caller i.d., it was Mom.
"Hey Mom, what's going on? You still at work?" I asked.
"No, honey, I'm actually out driving. I've got a lot on my mind. Can I pick you up?"
She got me worried but I told her yes. I shot Jaxon a quick text that I was going out with Mom and to just text instead of call that he was home. She sounded upset and I didn't want to be on the phone if she needed to talk.
Mom pulled up in the driveway about ten minutes later and I got in the passenger seat. I took one look at her mascara stained face and knew something was terribly wrong.
