Dan always knew he was no good. He just thought he'd have time to fix it.
It's the realization he doesn't have anymore that fills his last moments, though the visceral pain of his blood boiling in his veins, a close second.
If he had a wish, he'd change it all. Do it over again.
His blood evaporates from underneath his skin. Blue veins turn white and tough as rock. Steam comes out of his mouth, his eyes, his every pore.
It is too painful to feel.
Even Dan knows there's no wish powerful enough to change the truth of who he is. Who he was.
It's then that the light changes; the setting sun eclipsed by a pair of black wings. In the end, it is the sight of her that takes his last breath away.
