"Th-th-their wh-what?" I gasped out. I was utterly shocked at his words.
"Do not be so shocked, did you think we came to destroy them?" He asked.
"I-uh, well, yes, well, no, I don't know" I said exasperatedly.
"We aren't Elizabeth" he laughed," the king has been trying to hunt down the last of the Mothers and seize their clutches, for his own purposes, an army to be exact" he said solemnly.
"No! I won't let them take those dragons" I snapped,"I promised Rowena I would find them riders, but there are not many people with the colored eyes that these dragons need" I sighed,"You can't just choose one, it has to have already chosen who it wants" I said defeatedly. Suddenly I realized its hatching day! I have to be there.
"Oh my goodness!" I exclaimed, making Niall freeze in his search for food.
"What's the matter?" Harry asked worriedly.
"Its hatching day! Quickly come with me get on your horses and follow me, I'll take you there" I said already out the door to my saddled horse. I vaulted into the saddle grabbing the reins just as the last of the Riders got on their horses and I took off into the plains and then the forest. I was going almost at breakneck speed to the clutch as fast as I could. I heard the pounding of hooves as they galloped over the smooth terrain with me. All of a sudden I felt this painful jerking in my stomach. I yelped all of a sudden, and almost lost my seat on my horse, who neighed uneasily.
"Its OK Cato, I'm fine"he snorted but kept galloping. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Liam coming up beside me.
"Are you OK? I saw you almost fall a moment ago" he called to me.
"Yea just a pain I felt in my stomach, I'll be fine" I called back to him.
I turned my head back to the trail and I slowed down to a canter at the edge of the forest. I slowed down before I entered the forest. I halted my horse and dismounted, but just as I was about to put my boot on the ground I felt that pain again and gasped falling the rest of the way where I landed on the ground, gasping for air. Then it just stopped. It faded away into a dull throbbing. Thank god no one noticed.
"This way quickly!" I waved them to enter the forest. Which I promptly took off running into. It wasn't a far run but it was definetly tucked away safely. Then I stopped because before me lay what would be my fate for the rest of my life. I recognized the smell of the pinestraw I used to camouflage the nest, so no one would find it. I then walked carefully to the six watermelon sized eggs and sat down just as the first egg started to hatch. The men came up and saw what I was doing but did not come closer to me. I picked up the red one that I'd always been drawn to.
"Come, sit and watch the babies hatch, it won't be too much longer" I said to them quietly. They came closer and we sat in a circle around the nest. Liam was on my right while Niall was on my left. I noticed a large crack in the blue one in front of Niall.
"Niall watch that blue one" I whispered.
"Why?" He asked softly.
"It's hatching" I giggled, his expression was shocked as I handed him the blue one. And sure enough as soon as his hand was carefully put on the shell, a bright flash of blue illuminated our faces and the woods around us. But Niall also let out a cry of pain, and he clutched his leg in agony.
"Niall!" I yelled, fear ripping through me like a sword through armor. I grabbed him as he fell over in agony. Louis, Zayn, Harry, and Liam came over and pushed me out of the way and took care of him and I backed off. I turned away from them and paid attention to the eggs that lay before me. With alarm I realized that there were only five eggs not six.
"Its gone!" I said panicked, the only thing I saw were remnants of the egg.
That's when I started crying. I hadn't realized how much I was crying until I felt a small nudge at my hand.
"Go away Liam" I whispered.
Nudge.
Nudge.
Nudge.
"Liam I swear if you-" I started, but stopped when my tear filled eyes landed on the small blue head that was trying to get me to pet it.
"Lad's, you need to see this" I called. The little serpent climbed up on my lap and started to curl up when I heard someone clear his throat. I turned and looked at Niall and he was looking at me with jealousy and what looked like admiration in his eyes. The small dragon in my lap then lifted his head and looked directly at Niall, and made a what sounded like a tiny squeak. It scrambled out of my lap and curled up on Niall's lap.
"That's strange" said Zayn.
"They're choosing their lifelong riders" I whispered. I then realized that the others have a chance at being a rider to one of the hatchlings.
"Quickly form a circle" I said excitedly.
