A lone man wandered aimlessly around the dark depths of the forest, staring into nothingness as leaves dark as soot flew in the air, crumbling into nothing more than ashes.
His indifferent expression soon changed as his eyebrows arched up slightly. "How is it possible that something...no, someone, survived my Death Magic...?" With a somewhat newfound curiosity, the youth quickened his pace, hurrying to find the abnormality.
As he moved, his surroundings seemed to blur and fade away, seeming to disappear into the air. He then paused at a small, barely alive life form on the ground. Did he cause this...? No...the injuries the little one had sustained were quite physical.
The male carefully rolled over the life form, revealing a pale boy no older than 7 years old. As he slipped his arm under to cradle him, the boy winced. His eye fluttered open and met those of the older male's.
The man bore a frown on his face, feeling some sympathy. The young child's eyes looked far too mature and experienced...they were dark pits of emptiness, with no light at all.
The boy opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He looked sad, but didn't cry. He slowly moved his finger and wrote in the dirt: I have failed.
The older one did not know what it meant, but said, "I'm Zeref. Are you okay?"
The boy shook his head, then averted his gaze. He paused before writing: I'm so lonely...
Zeref reached out and gently embraced the child. "So am I."

Zeref didn't really have much of a home, but he took refuge in a small cottage that was made of stone bricks. Although it looked like it could barely fit one person inside the building, in truth the interior was quite large, contradicting the outer appearance. The youth carried the small child into his home, without a single sound uttered between the two. He laid the boy on a soft bed, and turned to a cabinet. He fumbled with some jars for a minute before pulling one off the shelf.
"I'm not much of a healer, but..." Zeref screwed the lid off, "This orb has a concentrate of healing power that I obtained from a...friend (*cough* Grandeeny I think *cough* totally making this up *cough*). It should help your injuries."
The black haired man placed it on the boy's chest, and a blue light washed over him. Within seconds, the boy was able to sit up without restraints.
Zeref smiled warmly at him...or at least he tried. He hadn't smiled for quite a long time...what, 400 years?
He handed the child a pad of paper and a pen. "I'm not going to interrogate you, but it would help if you answered some questions." The boy nodded affirmatively in response.
"Okay...what is your name?" The boy tapped the pen for a moment before scribbling, showing Zeref a neatly scrawled Hitomu.
Zeref nodded, asking, "How about your age?" Hitomu wrote a 6 underneath his name. "...I don't want to pry too much, so I won't ask you why you ended up like this. But I have a final question for you," Zeref continued, waiting for Hitomu to confirm.
The little boy shied away from him for a second, but then nodded slowly. Zeref closed his eyes for a moment, sighing. He had never done this before, and he didn't even know if what he was doing was the right decision. But it came out of his mouth anyways: "Would you like me to be your father, and...take care of you?"
Hitomu gaped, his eyes widening. The pad and pen fell out of his hands, hitting the floor with a solid thud. At first, Zeref thought he had said something too personal, and was going to apologize until Hitomu ran up to him and squeezed him.
Zeref looked at Hitomu, who's eyes were actually shining instead of being dull empty voids. "Is that a yes?" Zeref smiled slightly, ruffling the younger one's obsidian black hair.
Hitomu jumped up and down, a grin plastered on his face as he picked up the pad and pen, scribbling something. He showed it to Zeref, and it read: Will you promise not to leave me?
Zeref picked up Hitomu, hoisting the child on his shoulders. "I promise."
