A/N: Note, I am not a scientist, a survivalist, a doctor, or any sort of professional really, so take most of the information here with a grain of salt. Don't try any of this stuff for yourself, either.
Important Lore Note: Felt has been magic-changed to be 17 in this story (just about to turn 18). Nothing else with her circumstances or the story has been changed apart from that. Subaru is 18, as well.
°Natsuki Subaru, the Savant.°
Subaru was within a fog. A directionless, colorless fog, that surrounded him on nearly every side. No matter where his eyes traveled to, he could only see this fog, trailing in the unknown world around him.
'H-Hkrh-!'
Without even thinking, he brought a hand to his throat, clawing away at it with his fingernails. He felt like he was choking, drowning, losing all air in his lungs – it seemed that this fog itself was inhospitable to life, and he was no exception.
His consciousness fading, Subaru finally noticed them, two pairs of colors that seemed to be facing him from within the fog. Ominous orbs of a vibrant purplish-blue and a deep, almost uncanny dark black. They were truly only visible because of the fog's complete and utter lack of anything – anything, but these two colors.
Then, they moved. As soon as Subaru saw their movement, his mind was practically shouting at him that these were not colors in the darkness – but eyes. Eyes scanning over every inch of him, watching him, judging his every movement. They seemed almost indifferent to his suffering, as if he wasn't slowly choking to death in front of them.
Soon, it became too hard for the raven-haired boy to pay attention to those gazes, falling to his knees within the void. The focus in his eyes grew distant, and his vision became blurry. His ears were ringing, like something had just exploded next to them. Any control over his body had entirely faded.
Cold. Natsuki Subaru felt coldness quickly overtaking him, spreading through his body with every passing second.
And as that coldness came, he could faintly hear the sound of something clashing. No, based on the intensity of the noises, and their seemingly back-and-forth nature, it was more apt to call it fighting.
Subaru had no idea why – perhaps it was something as irrational as instinct, or a simple guess, but he knew that for whatever reason, the two orbs that laid beyond the fog seemed to be fighting over something. Something that his brain did not have the capacity to think about for too much longer.
The world around him seemed to suddenly change – the fog seemed to be switching colors, from a dense, sickening purple, to a bright, all-encompassing whiteness. His impending death, his barely alive mind, all of it made for an experience of Subaru not even being sure whether he was alive or not.
Just before the life faded from his eyes...Subaru felt breath enter his lungs again. He wheezed, coughing and coughing as he rolled over onto his stomach, propping himself up with his hands. Death, for whatever reason, had decided to leave him.
"Air...h-hrk...air..." He rasped, eyes trembling as the life slowly filtered back into his body. Regaining awareness, the first thing he did was look around, desperately trying to attain some understanding of his situation.
However, there were no answers. The two eyes had all but disappeared, and he was left in the fog once more. The only difference was that the once shifting, colorless fog...had turned a bright white.
As soon as he noticed the fact, it was as if tiredness began to take over his body – rather than facing the harsh winter of death, however, he felt like he was simply being lulled into a restful sleep.
