Jade
"You're a great girl, Jade. Anyone will be lucky to have you. It's not just me." Trevor spoke the words that every girl in a relationship did not want to hear.
If I'm great, then why are you saying this? I said to myself before I asked my boyfriend, "Why not?"
"I'm sorry. The truth is that I want someone spontaneous and fun. I've realized that I want a girlfriend whose actions are not too calculated." He explained while he fixed a lost strand of his brownish hair with grey streak. His combed-back hairstyle was now perfect.
Other people desired predictability but he craved the opposite. The words stung but somehow I tried not to show any sign of disappointment in front of him. I put up a strong facade and reacted, "I'm not sure how I feel about you lately anyway."
The conversation from our last date replayed in my mind. I was upset but also mad. After two months of dating, he ended it because I lacked the spontaneity and excitement that he was looking for. This experience made me realize that as an eighteen-year-old I still had a lot to learn about relationships.
Trevor was a third year student and an education major at a university which was two blocks away from Brentwood High. He applied for the undergraduate teaching assistant program and chose my high school to earn his academic credit.
My best friend Kara interrupted my thoughts. "Jade, how are you holding up?" She was concerned about me. I honestly didn't want her to worry so I avoided it.
"Do you want to go to The Dessert House after school and feast on cupcakes?" I immediately suggested this to distract her.
"I'm here to listen whenever you want to talk. I'm just letting you know." Kara reassured me with a hug.
"Thank you. I'll see you later." I waved goodbye to my best friend who left for her class.
It was my free period and I wandered around aimlessly. I heard music spilling in the last room down the hall. It's the music class. I peeked at the door to catch a glimpse of what was going on inside. They were rowdy. I wiped my maroon, wayfarer-style eyeglasses to see a clear view.
My eyes landed on the suave Alistair Camden, lead vocalist of our popular high school band, Prism. His dark brown tousled locks were dancing in the air as he strutted like he owned the place. He was literally everywhere creating a buzz and engaging everyone in the activity. It was exciting.
Alistair and his band mates had aspired to play at the coveted gig called Spotlight of Brentwood High's annual Kaleidoscope Fair. It was a live concert in which the chosen act could perform on the last day and the highlight of the event. He had attempted to achieve this last year but failed. There was a rumor that the Student Council president and Alistair had a conflict. He picked a DJ instead and Alistair was furious.
Kaleidoscope was only months away. And I was the newly-elected Student Council president for this year, our senior year. There was a possibility that Alistair would try again to get the gig. I had to wait and see. I left instantly for the fear of being caught eavesdropping.
It made me ecstatic that I, Jadelyn "Jade" Scott was the main person-in-charge. I wasn't a shoo-in for this post but the result of the election proved otherwise. My happy state turned sour when I saw my ex-boyfriend.
"Is it your free period? You know, you can get detention for skipping class." Trevor teased and his cobalt eyes twinkled with humor. He was acting like nothing happened.
What a jerk! One day, I'll show you that I can be spontaneous and fun. I thought while I was forming a response to what he said. His phone rang and I silently thanked his caller for giving me the chance to flee from him. I left as quickly as I could. When I turned around, I almost stumbled but regained my balance.
Alistair stared at me with an amused look on his ruggedly-handsome face. "Hey Prez, be careful. It's a not good sight for a person of your authority." He was mocking me.
"There's no need to worry. I got it under control," I retorted.
"Are you sure? You and the floor are about to meet."
"Thanks for pointing it out."
"I really thought that I will be taking you to the nurse's office. I'm wondering how I should carry you. It can either be by piggyback or princess style."
"Haha. Very funny!"
"I am funny. I have a good sense of humor."
"Are you trying to annoy me?"
"I am trying to annoy you. Is it working?"
"Yes."
"You look cute when you're annoyed."
A blush crept over my face. He was enjoying this. This person was effortlessly charming. He definitely knew how to use his charm. No wonder his band had many swooning fangirls.
I had a weird feeling that we were being watched. Trevor eyed us with curiosity from a distance. In the next moment, a girl with a lovely mane of blonde hair tapped him on the shoulder. He rewarded her with a megawatt smile.
I wished that I could wipe the smug look on his face. Alistair was already gone. All of a sudden, an idea popped into my head. I couldn't contain myself that I started to run in the direction of the library.
"No running in the halls, Jade. I do not expect this behavior especially from you." Somebody lectured me.
I craned my neck and apologized, "I'm sorry, Principal Brannigan. It won't happen again."
"It better not." He shook his head and moved towards his office.
I slowed down a bit. I needed to gather my thoughts in order to make the plan. I smirked when I envisioned my scheme. Trevor Callahan wouldn't know what hit him.
