It’s Always Harder Than It Seems.
Chapter 1
“Maybe we could draw on the board? Or play with the blocks. Or even do a puzzle.” The little girl said, trying to weigh her options. She finally decided and dragged me over to the crafts table. I sighed, I don’t see how kids have so much energy! I love working with the pre primary kids, I do, but it’s just so tiring!
She came to a stop and was in front of the drawing area. I smiled at her as she got out the coloured pencils. She started colouring and I started to zone out. I wonder what these kids think of. Relationships, friendships, how they look, family problems. It’s been so long since I was young, I can’t even remember.
I was suddenly pulled out of my thoughts. I felt a tug at my skirt and I looked down to see the girl with a picture of the rainbow in her hands. The colours were all mixed up and some sides were longer than others but it was still cute. I smiled down at her as she gave me a toothy grin. She gripped my hand, her drawing in her other small hand, and started running over to one of the teachers.
“Oh hello Rai, what do you have here?” Miss Felton asked, now holding and looking at her drawing.
“I drew a rainbow!” Rai exclaimed.
“That you did.” Miss Felton said handing the picture back. Rai ran off and Miss Felton turned to face me.
“Magenta, I need to ask you a huge favour for me.” She said with a sheepish look on her face. I sighed in amusement.
”What now?” I asked with a smile.
“Nothing really, except help the new helper around. You know, show them what to do, where everything is.” She said. I gave a small chuckle.
“Sure, I’ll help.” I said.
“Great.” Miss Felton said. “He’ll be here in about 10 minutes.” She said before walking off.
Wait, a he? It’s going to be a guy? I thought.
“Magenta!” I heard another little girl call out. I felt myself being dragged and soon the cold air rushed by my face. The little girl had dragged me outside. She started running down the hill and I almost toppled forward from having to bend over for her to hold my hand. She stopped at the ladder at the playground. She gave me a smile and then started climbing up, her blonde hair bobbing up and down.
She held her hand out for me to take and I took it, but pulled myself up. I could have sworn I heard a chuckle but ignored it. She pulled me along the bridge, pass the small slide and then ended at the rockwall. I smiled to myself. I always loved these when I was their age. She started to climb down and I was set ready in case she were to lose grip but I’m sure she wouldn’t. Once she made it down, she practically begged me to come down. I laughed and obeyed. I gripped onto the bar for support and twisted my body around so I was stepping on one of the stones. I looked down to see the girl was already gone. I silently laughed, typical kids, always finding it hard to find one thing to do.
I continued to climb down, always finding my footing until, my foot slipped, causing me to fall backwards, losing my grip from my hands as well. My eyes widened and a gasp escaped my lips. I was waiting for the impact of the floor, but it never came. Just warmth from underneath my legs and back. I blinked my eyes open and looked up. I only just noticed that I had been caught. The guy who had a hold of me let me down, though my eyes stayed on his deep green ones.
“Hi, I’m Gale.” He said smiling, holding his hand out for me to shake. I took his hand in mine.
“Magenta.” I replied politely. He pulled his hand back and put it in his pocket.
We started walking back up to the building and the first thing you hear are the children’s screaming. How it always is.
“So, are you here to pick one of them up or..?” I asked. He gave out a laugh.
“No, I’m the new helper.” He said. I just nodded.
“Ok, well I’ve been set to help you when you got here. So umm.” I said, getting stuck on what to say.
“Ok, well to start off. What exactly are they doing now?” He asked.
“Oh, this is one of the free times for the day, then after that is lunch.” I said confidently.
“Ok then. So what would we usually do in ‘free time’?” He asked.
“What ever they want us to do.” Was all I said before one of the little kids was already dragging him off. He gave me a shocked look but then calmed down once he realized what was happening. The girl had dragged him to the ‘house’ area. It had a little play kitchen and bedroom and the dress up boxes. Which was what the little girl went for. After rummaging through the box for a while, she pulled out a large, silk, bright pink cloth. I almost laughed at his face. The girl gave him this evil looking grin and then started wrapping him in it. This time I did laugh, so hard that I ended up on the floor.
“Magenta, what are you doing on the floor?” I heard Miss Felton ask. I pointed to where Gale and the little girl was and I heard her laugh from above me.
Once we finished out laughing fit, she helped me up and then the bell went off, signalling lunch time. Oh this will be fun. I thought,
