Not my headcannon

Squid is transmasc, he transitioned before he went to train with the other false dragonets, but he never told them for fear of being bullied, so they just assumed he was smaller and had a higher voice than usual. He once had a crush on Flame, but that didn't go well, so he is cautious about love in general.

Flame is bisexual, though he'd have to work through quite a few things to get into a relationship. He had a thing for Squid at one point, but he never came to terms with it.
