Part 1: 2 Boys on a Doorstep

Part 2: Bedtime Story

Cuphead and Mugman age 4-5

Part 1

I ran around the house in a panic. "Get back here you rascal!!" Mug was already brushing his teeth, while Cup was running around with nothing on. Mugs just turned 4 and Cup is about to turn 5. It's hard to keep two boys in their place. Cup was making it very hard for me to catch him. He was running up on the furniture and climbing fragile objects. "Get over here and put on your PJs, young man!!" Cup just giggled and kept running. I stopped and leaned against the counter to catch my breath and think. I don't know how I was still alive. I've been raising these boys since they appeared on my doorstep 3 years ago. It is so sad how these two were left alone to a random person. I remember that day vividly.

I was just a sophomore in college, and I had a huge assignment due. It was around 2 am in the morning when I heard a knock at my apartment door. I dizzily got up and went downstairs to see who had the guts to knock at my door in the middle of the night. I opened the door to see no one there. I looked side to side to see what stupid teens thought it was funny to bother me at this time. I see a small thing in the corner of my eye, so I look down to see a basket with something in it. I saw two babies with cups as heads in the basket. The moment I saw them, I thought I was delirious or something. I mean- cups for heads? That's not possible. I closed the door and went to drink some water and take my temperature. Surely I was just imagining things. After about a minute, I heard crying from the door. That's when I realized that I'm probably not hallucinating. I opened the door again and the "Blue nosed one" was whining. I slowly leaned down to his face and touched his little baby hand. He grabbed my finger and he stopped crying. He then looked up at me with these big, beautiful, blue eyes. I KNEW that this was really happening. I wanted to start panicking, but no words nor sounds came out of my mouth. His hand led my finger to his mouth and he sucked on my PIP joint as if it was a pacifier. I looked at the other one who was still sleeping. The "Red one" actually had a pacifier with a string attached to it. At the end of the string, there was a piece of paper. I removed my finger from the baby's hand and picked up the paper. It read, "Please take care of Cuphead and Mugman." Both names were written in different colors. At the bottom of the page were their birthdays and nothing else. The only thing I remember next about that day was that I brought them inside and had a huge panic attack. I thought there was no way to take care of two boys. Heh... I love that day.

Part 2

"Mom?" I snap out of my flashback when I hear a voice. I look over to see Mugman with his pajamas on and holding his favorite teddy bear. I found that bear at a garage sale a few days after the boys appeared on my doorstep. It was his favorite stuffed animal. He never goes anywhere without it. "I got Cuppy to brush his teeth." He looks down at his feet while speaking as if he was afraid to talk to me. Mugman was always the shy one. "You did?" I asked. "How on earth did you get him to listen to you?" "I just asked him nicely and said please." I have no idea how Mugman gets Cuphead to do stuff. I feel like Cup respects his brother more than he respects me. I thanked Mug and I led him back to his room. Cup was hanging on the top of the bunk bed with his shorts on and no shirt. Mug hops into the bottom bunk and snuggles up with his blanket. I look up at Cup who is still full of energy. "Cuphead. Hop down and put a shirt on." I walk over to the fan and turn it on. "I don't want to wear a shirt!" Cup said while sitting down in his bed. I smirk and walk back over to them. "Well, I guess you don't want to hear a bedtime story." I start to walk out as Mugman sits up. "Bedtime story!?" Cuphead hears and hops out of his bed. "Bedtime story!!" He quickly runs over to his dresser and puts a shirt on. "I'm ready! I'm ready! I got a shirt on!" I sit down next to their bed while Cup hops into the bottom bunk so he can hear the story. "Alright. What story do you guys want to hear?" I ask. "The Devil one!" Cup says excitingly. Mug looks scared and holds his bear tightly. "Not that one! That one is scary..." "It's not that scary, Mugzy." Cuphead hugs his brother. I cannot hold in my smile. These two are just too cute. Mug looks at his brother. "Ok... Go ahead, mommy." He looks back at me. I rearrange my sitting on the carpet, trying to get into character.

"Ahem! Once upon a time, there were two brothers. Now, these two brothers love to get into trouble, but sometimes trouble can lead to very bad things." Mug leans his head on Cup's shoulder while listening. "One day, the two boys were walking through a forest. They were eating apples and playing tag. Then, one brother goes deep into the forest, trying to explore new plants. He and his brother find this huge building. They both go inside to see a huge party-" ''Were there games?" Cup interrupted. "Yes, many games. Board games, video games." I reply. Cuphead bounces up and down. Mug giggles a bit. I smile and continue. "The boys run around in the building, trying to play as many games as they can. Then, a mysterious man runs into them. He asks them if they want candy. If they want candy, they must win a game. One of the brothers agrees while the other hesitates on his answer. The mysterious man takes off his robe and he is the DEVIL!!!" Mugman hid under his blanket while holding his brother. "It's ok, Mugzy." Cuphead says. "It's just a story. It always ends happily!" Mug pops his head out of the blanket trying to be brave. Cuphead looks back at me, telling me with his smile to continue. "The devil grabs one of the brothers. 'You better win the game, or else I take your soul!' he said. The brothers are both scared, but they know that they have the power to be brave. One brother kicks the devil, hurting his leg. They both have a chance to run away, so they do. They run all the way home, where they are safe. They learn to never talk to strangers, because who knows how evil they can be."

Cuphead raises his hand. I giggle. "Yes, Cup?" "Is the devil still after them?" I look at the floor to think. "He could be. The devil could be after both of them for the rest of their lives. But, they both promised to protect each other. Maybe one day they would defeat the devil." "How would they defeat the devil?" Mugman asked. "With love of course. Brotherly love." "And with swords!" Cuphead yelled. He hopped out of the bed and pretended like he was sword fighting with a pirate. I chuckled. "Yes. With swords." I picked up Cup and put him in his bed. "I love you guys. It's time to sleep now." I walk over to the door and turn off the light. "Love you, mom!" They both say. I close the door, but I stand by it for a minute. I can hear the two chatting a bit inside.

"Hey, Cuppy? Do you believe that the devil is real?" I hear Mug ask. "I believe he is real as much as I believe in the tooth fairy." "So is he actually real?" "That's the whole point in believing, Mugzy. I think he is real, but I don't think he has the power to get us. Brotherly love, remember?" "Brotherly love," Mugman says softly. I listen to the two mingle about school and my story till they fall asleep. I could've been doing something productive during that time, but no. I was listening to my boys fall asleep. Such cute kids.
