When we got there, the woman introduced herself as Annamaria Berg.
We introduced ourselves, as well.
"The victim was knocked unconscious maybe an hour or so before she was shot. She was hit with a pipe-like structure at about 8:40 and killed an hour later." Annamaria Berg replied swiftly.Lily, Landon, Hansen, and I nodded. Hansen glared at me as I pulled out a notebook from my pocket and wrote down her words.
"Annamaria?" I said. "Call me Berg." She replied. "Have you found out who our victim was or where she was killed?" I asked. "Yes. And no. Her name was Mary Smith, but we don't know where she died." Berg said.
I jotted her name down. "Okay, Mary Smith... Anything else?" Lily said, as Hansen typed the name Mary Smith into his computer recognition system.
"Yes, looks like Mary has a record."He said, sounding very matter-of-fact.
"What's on her record?" Landon asked. Hansen replied, "A lot, from what I can see." I looked over his shoulder at the screen.I saw records of thefts, break-ins, even jacking cars. "Looks like Mary was a burglar," I commented. Hansen nodded, seemingly pleased. "She was, obviously, a burglar," he said.
I laughed internally at Hansen's know-it-all manner. On the outside, I put my poker face on. I said, "Anything else on Mary's record?" "In fact, yes," Hansen said, tilting his head.
"She has a history with fraud. She has tried to fake passports, drivers licenses, and credit cards under 4 different names." Lily furrowed her brow. "What are they?" She asked.
"Patricia Johnson, Linda Williams, Barbara Jones, and Edith Salazar," replied Hansen. "Looks like Mary's been busy!" Exclaimed Rory. Lily snorted.
"So, Mary Smith is an alias, I'm guessing?" I asked Hansen, turning the conversation back to a more serious tone. "I think so," he answered. He clicked the mouse a few more times and he nodded.
"I think we found Mary's real name, and a few others," he said, and Lily, Landon, and I crowded around Hansen and the computer screen, each of us wanting to spot Mary's real name first. "Gwen Roseboro," Lily said, spotting it first. "That's the name with the birth certificate."
Hansen clicked the name. "She has a family, too," I added, looking at the next of kin and emergency contacts lists. There were names listed under father, mother, sister, brother, and spouse.
"Her maiden name was Price," Hansen said. He clicked on the name listed as Mary's, I mean Gwen's, father, Jack Price.
The page that showed up informed us that Jack Price was alive and lived in Boston. "Salerno!" Lily shouted.
Commander Salerno came over and said, "Who is Jack Price? Why do we care about him in this investigation?"
Hansen responded, "Mary Smith is an alias. Her real name is Gwen Roseboro. Gwen is a burglar and a fraud. Jack Price is Gwen's father."Commander Salerno raised her eyebrows and said, "I'm impressed. But we need to call him and tell him his daughter was shot."
There was silence. Then Landon asked the question on all of our faces. "Who's making the call?"
"I will, to show you four how to tell a victim's family that a family member of theirs was killed." Salerno said. She walked to her office and beckoned for us to follow her.
I held my breath and composed my face, bad memories flooding my mind.
