TEN YEARS LATER...
We're in the rooms that "train" us to use our powers. It's a working order. Everyone is doing the same thing over and over again, clumped up by color. They tell us apart by these horrible color ornate jumpsuits that look like prison uniforms. We're in a warehouse to do our work as super-intelligent greens. We're going things with leather boots for some reason. (I honestly don't know what they do here, lol) There are military men and women everywhere around us decked out in heavy-duty gear and guns. It was scary at first, and it still is, but you get used to it. I mind my business when one of the squad leaders comes over to bother me.
"You're doing it wrong," he says as he comes up behind me. "Like this," he speaks as he roughly grabs the boot from my hands as he is still behind me.
"Look at me," he says. I don't and keep looking straight ahead. He says it again, but this time more roughly. I still don't. By now, everyone's attention is on us. "Look at me!" he yells one last time before I answer him. "We're not supposed to look at you."
"Hmm," he thinks thoughtfully for a moment, "Yeah."
He continues to stare me down behind me while I continue to work on the boots. After a second, he says, "The eaglets go over the holes, not under."
He suddenly sweeps everything off of my work table and creates a mess on the floor.
"I've had my eye on you for a while," he states menacingly. "You're too dumb to be a Green. But soon enough, we're going to find out the truth."
"The eaglets go under," a girl that stands next to me working interjects. She's a Gingerette and looks to be about my age. She's quite tall, standing at about 5'7. We happen to share the same "dorm" with a bunch of other greens. We've talked but only a little. From what I can remember, her name is Sam.
"What did you say?" The man that's in my face whipped around to her as he asked this.
"If you want a tighter fit, the eaglets should go under, not over," She states calmly as she looks him in the eyes.
'She's quite a person. I like her,' I thought.
"Well, aren't you super smart?" He states menacingly. His face getting red from anger and a hint of embarrassment.
"Yeah, like every Green in this room," she states with a hint of sarcasm. She doesn't seem to be taking any of his bullshit right now. "I guess inhaling all that shoe polish killed whatever brain cells you had left."
"We'll see about that," he angrily spits as he grabs her from the back of her collard green jumpsuit. And started to drag her out the door.
She yelped in pain, "Get your hands off of me!"
"The rest of you come too!" He orders everyone. We all do as he says, heading out the door in 4 single file lines with me in the middle of everything. He places Sam in front of me. He leads us outside as we see all of the other colors come out from where they were in 4 single file lines.
Suddenly he yells, "Run the test!"
'Copy that.' a voice from his intercom says. An alarm sounds and a robotic voice over the speakers says, 'Frequency test one.' Suddenly, high-pitched screeching noise plays through this loudspeaker, and the camp is filled with screams of all the kids. People are dropping to their knees, covering their ears. It physically hurts all of us. I dropped to my knees, covering my ears and screaming to try and drown out the horrible sound and pain it's giving all of us. My vision goes blurry, and I suddenly can't feel anything anymore. My whole body is numb. Then it all goes black.
___
I'm standing in a flower field. The sun is off on the horizon just before sundown. It's a beautiful sight, really. Someone calls my name but who? It's a male's voice, and I can't recognize who it is. I hear more voices, all-male. They're all laughing and having a good time. My name gets called again, and I decide to turn around only to get a glimpse of seven figures in the distance before everything fades away.
___
"Y/N..."
"Y/N, do you hear me?"
The 18-year-old lying in bed jolts up. They're breathing heavily. Were they in danger? Did they do something wrong? How did they get here? A million questions ran through their mind as they were looking around the bright "room" frantically. It looked like a cell more than anything. Their breath comes in shallow gasps. The Dr. beside them was doing her best in trying to calm them down.
"Shh, shh! It's okay. It's okay. Hey. You're okay," with these words; she successfully calms down the teenager. "You're gonna be fine, Y/N. Now take a deep breath in and out for me, okay?" After a few long and deep breaths, the Dr. asks, "Are you still in pain?"
The teenager next to her sighs, so she takes that as a no. So she moves onto her next question. "Do you know where you are?
"Yes," the troubled teenager says, finally replying to her with words.
"Okay," the Doctor sighs. "Hi. I'm Dr. Begbie. But if it makes you feel more comfortable, you can call me Cate."
There's an awkward silence left in the room, and she could tell Y/N was a bit uncomfortable as none of the "refugees" have a good history with the doctors here.
"Forget the doctor business. You know, before this, I was a social worker. And you remind me of a girl I used to know. What happened to her? I couldn't help her then. But I want you to know that I'm here for you now," she says as she leans over and takes Y/N's hand. She has a warm, comforting touch, just like a mother. You could truly tell she cared.
Their door to the room buzzed, signaling that someone unlocked it and was coming inside. Hearing this, Cate hurriedly let go of Y/N's hand and grabbed the clipboard and pen next to her, cleared her throat, and began questioning Y/N.
"Do you remember falling when they turned on the white noise?" she asks, looking professional. A few knocks on the wire fence interrupted the faked interrogation.
"Time's up!" a soldier yelled. Cate gets up and walks towards the man and not so subtly whispers information in his ear, "This time, it was different. I need to keep them overnight. I have more tests to run."
"You gotta take that up with Captain McManus."
___
"Results of the frequency test."
"Who spiked the highest?"
"My God, alert the captain.
