David's POV
I observed quietly, from my seat at the head of the table, as the Engineers made their way out of the conference room quietly. Nothing gives me more joy than the end of a successful meeting when everything and everyone has been put in order.
As the CEO of one of the biggest Mechanical Company, I love interacting with everyone that works for me and know their thoughts, in this way I can keep an eye on them and make sure they do what they are suppose to do.
I love the money and name I've made for myself. I didn't expect to run a company at just Twenty three. I'm glad I never depended on my Dad and his stupid money which makes him feel like a God over all humanity and neglect his own family.
I had barely turned eighteen when my Dad sent me off to military school. He said I needed to be tamed. It was a rough five years, years I spent fueling the hate I had for my Dad and then I vowed to make it on my own and never depend on anyone.
Mum was just an innocent lamb in all this, blinded by love that she can't see that her husband is the Devil.
I feel so broken anytime I look at her and see the sad lines on her face or anytime she calls me and ends up breaking down uncontrollably. She's my world and I need to get her far away from the pain as possible."Sir you have a visitor" Grace my humble secretary said bowing slightly.
I didn't notice her walk in but I was grateful for the interruption. My past was a shitty one and the last thing I need to be doing on a beautiful tuesday morning is to go down that lane.
"Who is it?"
"It's Miss Rodrigo Sir" She replied bowing her head again
"Grace stop bowing when you speak to me I'm not a god for Christ Sake. Send her to my office I'll be there shortly" I said getting up
"Okay Sir" she said bowing again
I gave her a very disapproving look
"I'm sorry Sir" she said trying her best not to bow this time
"It's alright you can go" I said walking towards the floor to ceiling window that oversea all of Toronto.
I looked outside for close to five minutes just admiring the view then I brought my hands to my head and slowly rubbed my temple, I had to go see Alexa, keeping her waiting was not an option.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey Handsome" Alexa greeted as soon as I step into the office."Hey Lex, what's up?"
"Nothing much, I was just missing you"
"You just saw me roughly five hours ago" I said rolling my eyes.
Lex and I have been friends for as long as I can remember at a point we were more than friends (but it didn't work out). She was my first everything, my first love (more like lust), my first kiss...Her family and ours are very close, her Dad and mine were business partners, like-minded fools.
"David I asked a question" Lex said looking sternly at me.
"I'm sorry I didn't hear you" I said looking her straight in the eye.
"Yeah it was obvious you were zoned out.I was talking about the cake tasting..."
"Alex, this is just an engagement party we don't need all that" I interrupted a little too harsh
"But Babe,.."
"You know I'm just agreeing to this marriage because of my Mum" I almost shouted
Lex's eyes clouded immediately with tears.
"Lex I care about you, but I just don't love you that way. What happened between us is in the past and it was a mistake...I..I..just don't feel that way towards you and you know this" I ended with a sigh
"But I love you David, I've always loved you..." She said already sobbing silently
" Hey, please don't cry" I said moving close to hug her.
"I love you David" She said wrapping her arms around my neck and then she kissed me.
At first I felt shocked at the contact of her lips on mine then I felt anger brewing.
I pushed her away
" Lex, what the Hell" I said with so much anger that she flinched
"What is wrong with you?" She replied with equal venom.
"Please don't ever do that again" I said barely containing my anger.
"See David, we can make this work. I know you still love me. I know it"
"You know nothing, absolutely nothing. Look Lex, I'll advice you tread carefully if you don't want to lose me as a friend too" I said with finality and just then my iPhone buzzed in my pocket.
"What are you saying?" She stared me straight in the eye.
"This marriage is off, I just can't do this anymore"
"You can't do that!!.."she yelled
"Lex don't raise your voice at me. You need to leave now"
"I'm not going anywhere, we are not done talking"
"Look Lex, I'm done talking I have nothing else to say and I'm sure I didn't stutter when I said the marriage is off. Leave now!" I shouted.
She visibly flinched.
"You can't do that, David!!" she yelled, grabbed her Prada bag and stormed out of the room.
As soon as the door closed I let out a breath that I didn't realize I was holding.
After spending a little time in the office tidying up, I left for Church. My place of solitude.
