It was late, she was tired. She wanted to sleep, but as she peered through the window to the starry night, she knew it was time. She rose up and hurried across the frozen corridors today's the day, the only day. If I don't do it now, I never will.
She ran and ran until she found the open door, it was the thirteenth night. She had to see the other world beyond the lighted door. She was about to enter through the tall door when she saw her brother. Her eight year old brother stood there silent. He only stared and tilted his head "why are you leaving?" He asked, looking into her ruby eyes. "I thought you liked it here. Elder said you did."
Ruby didn't move, she didn't speak. Her brother wasn't supposed to know, that was the plan. "I am sorry." She answered, she kneeled down and gave him a hug. "I will come back for you, but they're calling."
"Who's calling?" he said quietly, peering at the door behind her.
Ruby thought about that for a moment, "That question lies in your heart. My heart is beating and soon I will see them, they have my heart and one day you will see that as well, but in your place."Her little brother didn't understand now, of course he didn't. He was eight. But he still understood, and one day he would. This sentence would be her last one. But she swore she would come back, she knew it.
"I love you Theo. But it's the night, I have to go. I swear, I'll be back. Just stay here and be safe."Theo nodded and turned heading out through the door, she felt tears begin to stream down her face. But she knew it wasn't the last time, I will see you in six years little one. So stay alive and safe. She watched the little boy leave through the walls, she heard him begin to sob.
She was surprised he understood; that she wouldn't come back.
