"You sure?" I ask Fionna, one last time by the time Dylan approaches us.
"What's up, kids?" He asks, looking at our general direction.
"Dylan, can we talk, alone?" Fionna speaks up, sounding as confident as she does before a big game. Man, she might be right after all, she needs to do this for her own peace of mind.
My brother nods at her, looking towards me for a hint, "Sure, you wanna talk here or-?"
"Can we grab a cup of coffee, if you won't mind?" She asks and Dylan nods, looking at us, which is why Fionna adds, "Alone."
"Munchkin, Kace will drive you home, okay?" My brother looks at me and I nod at him, too nervous for my best friend to say anything else.
After school gets over, I avoid getting in a conversation with Josh or Ethan, both of whom try to catch a hold of me. I need to be home when Dylan comes back.
"Is it okay if we drop May first?" Kace asks and I immediately wish to protest before he adds, "I wish to be there too when he comes back."
I sigh, "Alright."
I feel helpless when things aren't under control, an emotion I'm quite familiar with but not at all comfortable with. But I've got to realise that this has so little to do with me and so much to do with Fionna as a person. I'm just an observer in Fionna and Dylan's life right now.
May takes the passenger seat while I hop in the back. Kace looks at me through rearview mirror and I pass him a small smile. They both get into a conversation but I pay no heed to it, letting myself be busy in my own thoughts.
When Kace drops off May, I still make no effort to move to the passenger's seat. He rolls his eyes in the mirror, "C'mon, it's a ten minute drive. Let's talk."
I sigh and move to the front through the camisole space.
"Farrah! No!" Kace almost pushes me off and I glare at him. "What the fuck!"
"What? You told me to sit here."
"Yes, and the correct way to do that is to get out of the car and get back in through the door." He sounds agitated but I just wave him off. After a pause, he speaks up, "Why are you so bothered about all this?"
"Fionna doesn't deserve to get her heart broken." I state simply.
"Don't you think she needs to do this? She has been pining over him for a few years now, it isn't healthy."
"Yeah, I guess she needs to rip off the bandage." I sigh. "You're worried too."
He shrugs while keeping his eyes on the road, "Well, only because Dylan would go in a massive guilt trip. Fionna means a lot to you, after all."
I nod, picking on my skin, "Well, we can't control everything."
He doesn't respond. Instead, he focuses on driving us to my house. When we reach, I notice that Dylan hasn't returned yet. But Kace and I make our way inside the house nonetheless.
To kill time, I heat up a frozen pizza that we share while playing Mario Kart.
"You're a sore loser, Fay." Kace teases, chewing on the pizza and I roll my eyes.
"Well, you cheated."
He takes in a dramatic gasp, "I didn't."
I smile to myself. Kace and I barely spend time together, just the two of us, his company isn't so bad after all. We do have to start working on our projects soon anyway, so I'll be seeing a lot more of him.
