College. It was supposed to be that time in your life where things start changing and you start maturing but so far, all I've noticed was that this was just like high school. Sure, the ages have changed and the "problems" have changed too but for the most part, everyone is still obsessed with themselves, their image, and the group of friends they surrounded themselves with.
I'm halfway through my first month at Penn State. Classes aren't hard but I also didn't think they would be at this point. Everything is entry level. The only real highlights have been the football games. Being able to attend an actual game at Beaver Stadium and not just watch it on television has been probably the highlight of my year.
I was walking to class the Monday of Homecoming week when I heard a bunch of girls squeal. "Oh my gosh! Here he comes!" I groan before turning to see who exactly they were talking about. Striding up to the science building was Jake Wyler, some hot shot from California who got a scholarship to play football. All of the girls fawned over him and he just ate it up. Well, I knew a thing or two about football players and I was not going to fall for his act. Even if his eyes were the most alluring shade of blue and his lips looked super kissable.
I roll my eyes and continue to make my way to the lecture hall to try and stay awake for Chem 101. If I could have chosen any other type of science, I would have. I hated Chemistry. I hated it even more because the professor thought he was funny and stuck me with Wyler for my lab partner. "Morning Summers. Dream of me last night?" He asks smoothly, plopping down in the auditorium seat next to me, flinging his book bag to the ground.
"In your dreams Wyler." I retort before digging out my blue clamshell MacBook and popping it open to take notes.
"Every night." He says, wagging his eyebrows at me. I hear the other girls around me groan as they hear our banter and see my lack of interest but I can't help it. I have no interest in a meathead who is only here to party.
"You're disgusting."
"You wouldn't be saying that if you knew just what I could do to you."
"Wyler, I wouldn't let you touch me with a 10 foot pole."
"So an 11 foot pole will do. Good to know." I don't say anything as the lecture begins and I focus on taking notes, ignoring the looks he keeps passing my way. It's all about the chase with guys like Jake and I refused to be just some other girl who was stupid enough to fall for his charm.
At the end of the lecture the professor's aide passed back our midterms. I wasn't surprised by my 98. I may not like the subject but that didn't mean I didn't work hard. I hear Jake sigh and I turn to him, brows furrowed in confusion. "What's wrong?" He shows me his grade, barely passing. "Oof." I say, not sure how else to respond.
"Miss Summers, Mr. Wyler, if you two could stay after, there's something that I need to discuss with you both." Our professor says as everyone else packs up and leaves. "So I'm sure you noticed your grades. Mr. Wyler, I've already spoken to the coach. If you can't get your grade up to at least a C by the end of the week, you're benched from Friday night's homecoming game."
"But how am I supposed to do that? Homecoming is this Friday."
"I'm giving out a make-up midterm. You'll take it Thursday instead of being in lab. If you pass, you're free to play."
"Not to be rude sir, but why am I here?" I ask.
"You were picked to tutor Mr. Wyler." I go to argue but he holds up a hand to stop me. "I don't really care for your excuses. You got the highest grade on the midterm. Enjoy." He says before gathering his things and leaving.
"You've gotta be fucking kidding me." I say as I watch him walk out the door.
"So Tutor... When do we start?"
I roll my eyes. "I have another class right now. If you're free in 50 minutes, meet at the coffee house right off campus." I say before walking off.
"And let me guess? Giving me your number isn't your style?!" He yells after me.
"You gotta earn it Wyler!" I yell back before turning back around and heading to my Lit class. This week was going to suck ass, I could already tell.
