Unexspected

It was lunchtime and my day was already going to hell. All people did was stare at me and ask questions. Like god just get a life and let me be miserable. Anyways I sit down at a table in the corner with Maria jabbering about something when all of the sudden she yells quietly,” OMG look, he’s here.” she said in a dreamy state. 

I look up and scoff.” I can’t believe you have a crush on him, don’t you know he’s bad for you.”

She’s talking about Harlen Kingston. He belongs to one of the biggest mafia families in the upper East side of New York. He’s 16, a couple months older than me. He’s the only son his family has but he does have a little sister around 4 years old. He’s the mafia kingpin who acts all high and mighty like everyone should get down on their feet for him. Every girl wants him and sadly so does my best friend.

“ Who doesn’t,” she says.

“ Uh, me,” I say,” your looking at him like a lost puppy”. I say annoyed.

“ Am not,” she argues.

“ I think you're drooling,” I say playfully, wiping away the imaginary drool.

She smacks my hand away giggling. “ Oh come on, you mean to tell me you’ve never had a  crush on him, like ever, like not even a small one.” she says.

“ He’s good looking I’ll give you that, but no, I’ve never had a crush on him, not even a small one.” I say.

“ H-How is that even possible,” she says looking genuinely surprised.

“ Oh, I don’t know, Maybe the fact that he acts like a stuck up prince who has nothing better to do but cause trouble and change girlfriends like he changes close,” I say, her mouth hanging open.” I mean come on, He’s probably failing every class he’s in.” I say, wondering why she’s looking at me like I just confessed I committed murder or something.

“ How would you know,” I hear a deep voice behind me.

My heart stops and my cheeks get red with embarrassment. I look at Maria as I slowly turn around. He’s smirking at me and I just want to crawl into a hole and never come out. Before I can ask just how much he heard he says,” So I’m a stuck up prince huh?” He says, his eyebrows raising.

I turned to glare at Maria because she could have told me he was there, but no, she just wanted to sit there and let me embarrass myself.

“ I mean you can’t tell me I’m wrong.” I say. His smile disappears.

“ You better watch how you speak to me.” He says icily.

“ Why, are you gonna stomp and whine like a child if I don't’,” I say, making a pouty face up at him.

“ No, I’ll do worse.” he says angrily.

“ Like what, are you gonna run and cry like a baby to daddy and have him deal with me.” I say smiling at him. He’s practically fuming by now and Maria Looks like she doesn’t know whether to stop me or just stay there and watch.

“You don’t wanna mess with me, I can do things to you.” He says trying to scare me.

“ Oh no, I’m sooooo scared,” I say laughing, and stand up,” I'm done with this conversation, let’s go Maria.” I say grabbing Maria and starting to walk away when he grabs my wrist in a hard grip and pins me against the wall.

“ Don’t EVER walk away from me,” He yells, face inches away from my face.

“ Watch me,” I say, pushing him into the table behind him and take Maria’s hand as we start  running out of the cafeteria and into a classroom once we’re sure we lost him.

We’re both breathing heavily, leaning against the wall by the door so it looks like an empty classroom.

“ I can’t believe you just did that,” Maria says astonished.

“ Do what, tell what everybodys thinking.” I say. Normally I’m a good student and never go off like that but 1 I haven’t had the best day, and 2 I really don’t like him.

“ You should be careful, you kno-.” Just then my phone rings, cutting her off abruptly, and I pull out my phone to read the name on the screen. 

“ Dad? What is it.?” I say confused.

“ Honey, the police just called they - they have a suspect.” He says, voice breaking. My body goes cold.

“ Who - who is it?” I say as Maria asks what’s wrong because I’m visibly shaking.

“ HARLEN KINGSTON.”
