Alex and his sister grew up in the outer segments of the city where the farms and smaller villages reside. Living near the farms wasn't all that bad. They just have to know what areas have radiation and are off-limits. But while they knew they were not allowed to go, they still liked to push the limits. Their favorite place to go was a set of ruins near the walls, and they loved to explore and see the giant buildings that were crumbling.
The day they were taken everything was normal, but while they were exploring one of the half-fallen buildings Alex noticed that it was too quiet. Normally they would hear birds chirping and the fluttering of their wings when they scared away any that had settled in the building during the day, but this time there were no birds. He slowly walked around the building as his sister played.
As he was looking around he heard his sister scream. Turning around he rushed to where the sound came from only to find men in uniforms holding her. His vision narrowed and he could hear his heart. When they saw Alex they grabbed him and knocked him out.
When he woke up he was in a white room strapped to a table. He tried to break free but it was no good. From then on his memory was of being stuck with needles and pain. This went on for a few years and for a while everything seemed like it was going according to what the scientist wanted. That is until one of the final experiments something was not right. After the injections the doctors rushed him to a room and locked the door, Alex had no clue what was going on. He was in a pain haze as his body felt like it was on fire. As he was getting used to the pain, a new sensation rocketed through his back. He could feel a building pressure between his shoulder blades, that pressure soon turned into agony as a set of wings ripped out of his back.
It was at that moment he was considered an oblerite.
On the day the scientist decided to kill him he fought back. It was during this fight that he found out that he could control fire to a certain extent. He searched the area that he was in, asking many of the scientists where his sister was, only to find out that she was dead. She didn't make it past the first experiment. In a rage, he set everyone he saw on fire and didn't stop to see if they survived or not. While searching for a place to escape from he found a girl that was the color of ash and had a set of horns. She was scared and curled up in the corner shivering. In a moment of impulsivity, he grabbed her wrists and took her with him. Once they were outside of the facility he tried to fly for the first time. Only to fail and not make it off the ground. The two of them ran towards the wall, avoiding anyone they saw. This went on for a few weeks until they were able to make it to the outer ring. From here Alex hoped that he would have enough time to learn how to use his wings and make his escape with the girl, whose name was Shadow.Shadow doesn't remember what her life was like before the experiments. All she knows is pain and suffering. She remembers that she was supposed to be an assassin with the intelligence of a general. They wanted someone who could get the quiet jobs done quickly and with as few people as possible. She was on the final stretch of the experiments, but for some reason, the scientist wanted to see if adding more demon blood to her would improve her more. For the first few days, it seemed like it was working, that is until during one of the examinations small dark grey spots were noticed on her body. They watched the spots for over a month.
Hoping that they would go away, but they only got bigger. When her horns started to grow in she was classified as an oblerite.
All she remembers from then on is darkness and the smell of sulfur. She would see flashes of fire and sometimes she would be in a place that was covered in ice.
She could not control what she did when she was in these places. That's when she realized that she was seeing the memories that belonged to something else.
She decided to go by Shadow when she found out that she could control them to help her hide and obscure people's vision of her. She was scared of what would happen to her because she knew that she was a failure to them now. The day Shadow was freed from the facility she was found by a red-headed boy with a pair of black wings that were closed tight to his body. Within a moment he had grabbed her wrists and started to pull her along with him. She didn't know where they were going but anywhere was better than this small room.
They ended up staying in some ruins in the outer circle of the city while they looked for a way out.
