Long, long ago in Universe 3, Planet Vegeta was destroyed by a being named Frieza. Centuries after, two of the planet's survivors, Kakarot, or as his grandfather named him, Son Goku, and heir to the throne, Prince Vegeta, defeated Frieza, only for him to come back to make a wish for immortality with the dragon balls. Nobody knows who made them or how they came to be, but the only thing that everyone knows is that if you were to collect all seven of them, then you will get one wish from the mighty dragon god, Shenron. But, one day, something else arose that is said to protect the dragon balls everyday of its own life.
