"I'M HOME!" Momo shouted as she stepped into her apartment. She slid off her heels and sighed in relief as all the pressure on her toes washed away.
"Mommy!" a little girl with messy twin braids and big green eyes ran up to Momo.
Momo smiled and picked up the little girl, swinging her in the air. "Hey there, Butterfly!"
The little girl giggled at her nickname, it never failed to make her heart flutter with joy.
"Did Daddy take good care of you while I was at work?" Momo asked. She knew the answer already, but it's good to engage with your kids. Which is something her daughter's father should learn.
"Suyomi did fine," a man spoke from the living room. Speak of the Devil.
"Did she really do fine or did you just ignore her again and assume she did fine." Momo crossed her arms over her chest and popped out her hip— illuminating her demanding demeanor.
Suyomi's father, Sadaharu Naganori frown deepened. His eyes became redder than they were and a vein pulsed on his forehead. He hated when Momo caught an attitude with him.
Momo knew what was going to happen. Hurriedly, Momo leaned down and whispered in Suyomi's ear, "Go to your room, Suyomi. Hurry."
Suyomi knew what was about to happen, Momo never used her full name unless a problem like this happens. Suyomi swiftly walked between her mother and father.
Sadaharu noticed Suyomi attempted to escape and aggressively grabbed the little girl by her arm. "Look at her, she dresses like a boy. She should be wearing dresses and playing with dolls, not playing outside catching bugs or whatever." He grunted.
Momo scowled, "she can dress however she wants! Leave her out of this."
"Shut up, you skank," he growled, his grip on Suyomi hardened. Momo could tell because Suyomi's tears fell down her rosy cheeks like an overflowing bucket.
"Sadaharu, stop it! You're hurting her!" Momo tried to grab Suyomi but Sadaharu pulled the little girl back out of Momo's reach.
"Daddy, please let go of me..." Suyomi whimpered. The poor girl was practically gasping for air.
Sadaharu smacked his teeth and threw the little girl on the floor. Momo quickly rushed over to her daughter, "Hey butterfly, you okay?"
Suyomi nodded. Momo sighed, "That's good, now go to your room, I'll be there in a minute." without missing a beat, Suyomi ran to her bedroom, closing and locking the door.

"Butterfly...?" Momo knocked on the Suyomi's bedroom door, leaning in and placing her ear in it; trying to listen if the little girl was awake. There was silence for a while but then she heard shuffling. The doorknob began to shake, signifying that Suyomi was unlocking the door.
Momo stepped back, letting Suyomi open the door. The little girl poked her head through the door, looking up at her mother. Suyomi's eyes were red and puffy and her cheeks were still rosy. Her upper arm was stained with a big red hand mark, where Sadaharu grabbed her.
Momo's eyes softened at the little girl, she shouldn't have to go through this. Momo picked up Suyomi, placing her on her hip. Suyomi laid her head on Momo's shoulder, her eyes fluttering open and closed. She's fighting her sleep again.
Momo stepped into Suyomi's room, closing and locking the door behind her. Momo made her way to Suyomi's bed, plopping down. Momo laid back and snuggled Suyomi close to her.
Suyomi looked up at her mom with her big sage green eyes, her eyes began to well up with tears. "Mommy..." Suyomi traced the area around Momo's eyes, where a bruise was forming.
Momo chortled, "I'm fine, Butterfly. It'll go away soon."
"Why is daddy so mean to us?" Suyomi whispered, covering herself in the comforter.
Momo didn't know how to answer such a question. How the hell do you explain that to a six-year-old? "He just isn't my Prince Charming, it wasn't meant to be. You'll understand when you're older."
Suyomi stayed quiet for about 30 seconds, and Momo assumed the little girl had fallen asleep. Suyomi spoke up, "Okay, I'm older now."
Momo laughed, "No, butterfly. That's not what I meant."
Suyomi rolled her eyes and snuggled into Momo's arms, "Then where is your Prince Charming?"
"No, baby, I don't have Prince Charming," Momo chuckled.
"Not even daddy?" Suyomi asked, looking up at Momo with her big beautiful sage green eyes.
Momo shook her head sadly, "Oh, butterfly, a prince charming is more than just a boy. He's a man who'll love you and take care of you, he'll make sure all your needs and wants are taken care of. He'll love you no matter what."
Suyomi yawned and snuggled into her mother's hold.
She stroked Suyomi's hair as the little girl drifted off to sleep. "But if by chance, my Prince Charming did come and sweep me away, I'd be the happiest woman alive... just like Cinderella."
But little did Momo know, her Prince Charming wasn't much of a prince at all.
