A/N - A lttle background on this; Dick was captured (by none other than Slade, surpise suprise), and used as a mercenary for three years. He was just recently freed, and he is trying to adapt to every-day life.
——-
The day had been normal enough. They had been out shopping. Mar'i had been ecstatic to get to the shopping mall, smiling and giggling happily. And Dick just had to smile. She was so energetic and optimistic, just like her mom..
Dick leaned backwards, feeling the soft cushions of the car envelope him in a hug. For once he wasn't the one driving. Kory had pestered and asked to be the one driving, saying "I just got my driving on track again, don't you dare take it away from me", making it impossible for Dick to resist anymore.
He sighed as his gaze looked over the streets. For everyone else they just saw people walking, having a normal day. Some carrying bags, others just walking their dog or just walking down the streets.
But for him, he saw so much more.
He saw the kid who dragged his mother with him, trying to get to the toy-store just a couple of blocks ahead. He saw the man who stood smoking in the distance, looking everyone up and down (he made a mental note to find out who this man was and keep some taps on him). He saw the woman limping forward, having been damaged in some training (dance, he presumed by the way the woman held herself and the leg warmers she had on her legs).
But most of all, he saw targets. He couldn't get the thoughts out of his brain. He always saw targets. He found their weakness so easily, and he knew just the way to take them down. He saw the maneuvers in his mind, seeing everything.
He didn't like it. He hated himself for it. And he just couldn't stop himself. He couldn't stop it.
He sighed as his blue gaze looked over at his wife. He smiled softly as he looked at her. She had the holo-ring on, making her skin a fair tan one instead of the orange she usually had and making what would have been the white of her eye (green of her eye, in her case) white. But in all honesty, he loved her the way she originally was.
He chuckled deeply, the rumbling sound vibrating from his vocal chords. His voice was still rough and sometimes even raspy, but no-one seemed to notice.
Or no-one said anything about it, at least.
He himself had his own holo-ring, taking away the unnatural paleness to his skin and the thousand scars that littered his body and face. His eyes became a little lighter, but they still held their deep wisdom and pain, even though most people didn't see it. Ignorant bastards.
And that's when he saw it. Bright headlights heading their way. And on their file!
"Kory.." Dick warned, looking wide-eyed at the man heading their way, but he was too close.
It was like the world slowed down. Dick could see everything happening around them, all at once. He saw Kory nearly stepping on the breaks, but the car didn't slow down. He saw the desperate face of his daughter. He saw the fear in Kory's eyes.
"Down!" Dick all but yelled at the two females, hoping and praying they would be okay.
He leaned over to Kory's side and took the wheel with one arm, trying to diverge the path, and get his two girls away from the racing car.
He didn't even gasp as the car hit theirs, but he did gasp in pain as he felt his door bend towards him, crushing him. The air-bags came to somewhat ease the impact, but they weren't much of a help, as the car smashed into his side and sent him crashing into the dashboard.
A moan of pain left his mouth before car had hit his door that the glass shattered - apparently, a car had hit their front. He felt the glass pierce his skin as the two cars crushed the left side of the car, smashing him between them.
He looked over to his wife and child, feeling relief flood his veins. They seemed to be okay.
"Get... Out," he rasped as he looked at Kory. "Get... Her safe.." He could feel the darkness creep into his vision and he looked desperately at his wife...
Instead of protesting - as he knew she wanted to do - she did what she was told. A small smile crept over Dick's lips as he saw them out of the car, safe.
He could feel pain fill his world, and a small whine left his mouth. His legs were trapped, he could see that. But he couldn't feel them. He couldn't move them. Dick grunted as he felt metal pierce his side, rendering him stuck in his seat.
Dick felt darkness creep into his vision as he looked over to where Kory had left, and he exhaled painfully.
They were safe... And that was all that mattered.
He would accept this fate. After all, this was much milder than anything he had gone through these past three years. It was mercy compared to what he had done.
So Dick closed his eyes and exhaled. "I... I love you..." he whispered hoarsely before the darkness swept him up and lulled him into a blissful oblivion.

A/N - So, this is the end of the first part. This has been edited from the first time I published this, due to this being so old, coupled with the fact that this deserved to be fixed as well.
I have plans of having four parts of this, but they might take some time to write finished, as I have huge plans for the two last parts. So if I am slow, sorry.
AND, as some might not be aware of; I have a Tumblr where I post stories much more often. If you want to read more of my stories, please go visit that-one-strange-geek.tumblr.com, and the tag Iris Writes.See you next time!
