I have a secret. I hear people whispering but I can't say anything. Not because I'm scared to. Not because I'm shy. No, because I am Silence.
Every day, I walk through the hallways, silent. People always looking at me, knowing what I can't do. Shouting, whispering, and talking. New student, I be as nice as I can, but soon they find friends that are normal and don't pay any attention to me. I am, what you say, invisible.
"Hey, I'm Derek. What's your name?" An obviously new student says to me.
"I can't speak." I say in sign language as students stare at the new student.
"She can't talk." A lot of them say.
"Oh, um." He says hesitantly. "How are you?" He asks in sign language to show he knows it.
"How do you know sign language?" I ask him.
"Well, one of my friends at my old school couldn't talk so I learned sign language to talk to him." Derek says, smiling.
"Why are you talking to me? No one ever talks to me." I say in sign language.
"Everyone needs to be talked to, especially you." He says back, of course in sign language. Everybody stopped to watch our weird exchange but know nothing that we said.
"Okay, well, it's time for class. I got to go." I sign back.
"How 'bout we meet at lunch?" Derek signs and runs to class. Finally, someone who understands me. I have a feeling we will be friends.

"Hi again." I sign to Derek as we sit down to eat.
"Hey. So what is your favorite subject?" He asks.
"Creative Writing. It makes me feel like I do have a voice." I sign back and he nods.
"What is your name? You never got to tell me." He says.
"What do you think it is?" I sign, brushing my hair out of my eyes.
"Um, Faith? Amy? Rihanna?" He asks and I smile.
"Nope." I smile; it's good to have some conversation.
"Hey can we sit with you?" A few friends of Derek ask. I nod, even though I know they will get bored.
"New friends? Impressive and on the first day too!" I sign to Derek who laughs.
"I'm glad we met. I like having someone who won't kill me with talking." Derek says, jokingly and I punch him in the arm. An "ow" finds a way out of his mouth. I smile, having a friend is fun.
"You two seem to have a good chance together." His friend, Danny, says and I exchange glances with Derek.
"No, we aren't dating." He says quickly.
"Well, you definitely should." His other friend, Carol, says.
~*~*~
"Bye" I tell Derek as I start walking towards my house.
"Bye!" He waves.
