Chapter five: The Gamemakers

I wake up to the very familiar sound of Millicent knocking on my door. "Cato! Cato wake up! Wake up! Caaaato! Rise and shine! Cato seriously! GET! UP! NOW! Fine! be late for the Gamemakers! they will just give you a zero for your score!"

At the word Gamemakers I jump out of bed and pull on my uniform. I run down to the dining room and see that everyone is still there. I sigh. I take a seat next to Enobaria and Clove. "Okay! So today we just show our skills to the Gamemakers?" I ask. "Yes, and then they give you your scores. From numbers zero to twelve" Enobaria answers. "What did you get when you and Brutus were in the games, Enobaria?" asks Clove. "Oh! I got a ten and so did Brutus!" she answers.

After quick review of what to show the Gamemakers, we head down to the training center. All of the tributes wait in a line along the corridor until their name is called. We go in one by one starting from district one. The boys go first and then the girls.

"Marvel Cornwell" calls a peacekeeper. Marvel walks through the doors confidently. Ten minutes pass until they call Glimmer's name. She walks to the doors and flashes me a flirtatious smile on her way in.

I can see Clove clench her teeth whenever Glimmer flirts or even touches me. I always wonder why. Is she jealous? But how could she be jealous if she doesn't like me. What if she did have feelings for me? I get lost in my thoughts until I hear them call my name. "Cato Forthson." I immediately get up and walk into the training center. I wake to the center of the room and greet the Gamemakers. "Hello, I am Cato Forthson from district two." "Well Cato, lets see what you can do." says the head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane.

I grab some spears and start throwing them at different targets around the room. I hit each and every target, but not in the center...which might cost me some points. Then I decide to do some hand to hand combat with a mechanic dummy they have created just for this purpose.

I cut the dummy's legs and arms and finally, I make a huge gash in it's neck. If this were a human, they would be dead by now. Lastly, I get a sword and start slicing off the limbs of all of the dummies in the entire training center.

They tell me that I may go and immediately a few Avoxes come to clean up the mess I have made, and also to replace the dummies for the next tributes.

I head on up to the living room and see that my mentors, and my stylists are waiting for me. We discuss what I did in the training center with my mentors for a few minutes waiting for Clove to show up. We talk about strategies in the arena and interviews and stuff for about two hours, when suddenly the TV pops on.

Now I see Caesar Flickerman sitting behind a desk waiting to reveal the tributes scores. He starts by saying what a fine batch of tributes we have this year and how he hopes all of us the best. Then he gets right down to business. "Marvel with a score of nine! Glimmer with a score of eight!" They did pretty good. I am now happy I have them as allies. Now he is saying my score. "Cato with a score of ten!" Everyone starts to pat me on the back and tell me I did a good job. Even Clove congratulates me. I am very happy with my score and I doubt anyone will get higher. "Clove with a score of nine!!" I congratulate her and look back at the TV. Clove did a pretty good job. Even if she just threw some knives around.

Caesar goes on and on and so far nobody has gotten very good scores. He is now on district eleven. "Thresh with a score of ten!" I expected as much. He was very good in training. He is pretty strong and handy with a knife. Which makes him even more of a threat. "Rue with a score of seven!" Wow a seven for such a little girl? I wonder what she did?

Now he is at district twelve. "Peeta with a score of eight!" An eight? That is pretty good. I guess he isn't so weak after all. And finally he is on Katniss. "Katniss with a score of...." Caesar looks back at the score card a bit confused. What could he even be confused about? He continues.... "with a score of.....ELEVEN!"

Clove lets out a little shriek, Enobaria gasps, Brutus just stares at the TV with his mouth and eyes wide open and the stylists just keep looking back and forth between me, Clove, and the TV . Katniss got the highest score! An Eleven! That is so rare, it is practically unheard of! I am so mad right now! What could Katniss have done to get such a high score!? She did absolutely nothing in training! Suddenly I feel that I need to find out what she did to get the eleven and I know exactly how to find out.

"I want to be allies with Peeta, from district twelve!" I say to my mentors. Clove was about to protest but Enobaria and Brutus knew what I was getting at. If we become allies with Peeta he just might tell us what Katniss did to get that score. Plus he is handy with a knife and is very strong. He will be the perfect ally.
