I pulled myself out of bed because of a persistent knocking that sounded at my apartment door. In my hung over state, my mind wasn't working as it should. When I opened up the door the very sight of the person standing on the other side was enough to knock me out of my stupor. I was met by those same evil green eyes. Father stood on the other side. A smile broke across his face as he looked me over.

"Long time no see, huh Andy?" He asked.

I was frozen in fear. I knew all the color had drained from my face and I was trembling. My mouth moved but no words were formed. He's out of prison, but how!?

"You going answer me, boy?" He asked, a tinge of anger to his voice.

"Y-yes, i-it h-h-has be-been a-awhile." I stammered.

Father smiled and I mentally cursed myself to hell. I'm giving him the satisfaction he wants. He knows now that he still has control over me. Father took me by the shirt and shoved me to the floor.

"You're never going to change are you, Boy! You couldn't stand your ground against me if your life depended on it!" Father shouted.

Father repeatedly punched and kicked me and the more I fought the worse the beating got.

"Just stop! P-please!" I screamed.

After what seemed like forever the beating stopped. All the sudden a low growl sounded and I lifted my head from the cold hardwood floor to see a solid black dog with blue eyes. The dog took several steps toward us.

"Call your mutt off, Andy!" Father shouted.

The dog turned its attention toward Father. All in one motion the dog took ahold of Father's arm and pinned him to the floor. I slowly walked toward the dog and took ahold of the scuff of its neck.

"It's okay, dog. Let him up." I said.

The dog released my Father's arm and sat down beside me. Father left shortly after that, cussing and shouting at me. Again the dog growled and Father hightailed it out to his truck. I've never seen Father fear anything or anyone besides the police and it surprised me that he feared this strange dog. I looked down at the dog. I wonder where it came from.

"Thanks for saving me, girl." I whispered. "I guess it's time to hit the road and go some place else. I mean now that Father knows were I am and all."

I walked into the bathroom to wash all the blood off me and clean some of the deeper wounds before I started to pack. As I began to pack the dog watched me. I felt safe in her presence. I crammed all my belongings into two suitcases. I was out the door and to my car in a little under an hour. I didn't know where I was going but I didn't care. As long as it was far, far, far away from Father.
