The guards escorted us to my chamber, and upon arrival, two of their number meticulously inspected the room before permitting our entry. With a sense of unease still clinging to me, I requested two guards to remain within, while two others stood watch outside my door.
"Arabella, is all well with you?" Penelope's keen eyes noticed my tremor. She sat beside me on the edge of the large bed, her hand covering mine in a gesture of comfort. "You are safe here, dearest friend. No one shall ever cause you harm again."
A soft rap at the door announced a visitor, and Thomas entered, followed by several young ladies with demure expressions.
"What is the meaning of this?" I inquired, rising to my feet.
"These are to be your ladies-in-waiting," Thomas explained with a gentle smile. "I shall leave you to become acquainted." With a nod, he withdrew from the room.
The young women before me stood in a neat line and offered graceful curtsies. It felt surreal to think that I now had attendants to see to my needs. Such a life was foreign to me, yet I would endeavor to adapt.
"Please, tell me your names," I requested.
"I am Paige," the first girl said softly, curtsying again. "Lola, at your service," the next offered. "Anne," a third chimed in. "Mary," another voice followed, and finally, "Elizabeth."
"These are my sisters, Lily, and Penelope," I said, gesturing towards them. "And what, precisely, are your duties?" I continued, my unfamiliarity with such arrangements evident in my tone.
"We are here to attend to your rising, to assist with your toilette and dressing, and to be of service in any other matter you may require, Your Majesty," Lola explained with a respectful bow.
"Would you care to take your bath now, Your Grace?" Mary interjected gently. I inclined my head in assent, and they guided me towards the bathing chamber. Mary and Lola remained with me, while the other young women accompanied Lily and Penelope.
Returning to my bedchamber, I stood for a moment, observing my ladies as they moved with quiet efficiency. One arranged my garments for the morrow, laying them out with care upon a nearby chest. Another placed my modest collection of jewelry upon the nightstand. As each lady prepared to depart, she lowered her head in a silent bow, then gathered the hem of her gown and executed a final curtsy before me.
"Is there anything else you require, Your Majesty?" Lola inquired, her voice soft and deferential. The formal address still felt strange upon my ears.
"No, thank you," I replied with a small, genuine smile.
As the door closed behind them, I walked towards the expansive window, its heavy, dark red velvet curtains draped elegantly to the sides. The view beyond was breathtaking - a tapestry of vibrant, autumnal trees stretching as far as the eye could see. My life was indeed changing, and in ways that seemed benevolent. Yet, a tremor of doubt ran through me. Was I truly ready to embrace the mantle of Queen at such a tender age? I moved to the nightstand, extinguished the lamp, and settled into the soft embrace of the bed, sleep claiming me.
I awoke to the joyful weight of my little sister leaping onto my bed. My ladies-in-waiting stood nearby, their expressions gentle.
"You are to be wed today!" Lily exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Each of my ladies had already begun their tasks. Lola was artfully arranging my hair. Then, with utmost care, Mary and Anne helped me into my wedding gown. The dress was breathtaking in its simplicity and elegance. It was a sweeping creation of pure white silk, the fabric flowing around me like a cloud. Long, delicate lace sleeves extended to my wrists, and intricate pearl embroidery adorned the bodice, catching the light with a soft shimmer. It was a vision of purity and grace.
