Chapter 1
Cold, hard rain drops hit my scratchy, dirty back. I'm soaked with freezing water. I'm scared, wet, and all alone. I'm just in a soaking wet box with holes under a bench in a large town with trains. The trains roar by, loud as they can. My sound is amplified, and my ears hurt. I squeal. I cry.
How much longer do I have to live in this cruel world? I don't want to have to suffer anymore, but, I'm scared to die. What will happen? No one cares for me. I don't even remember how I got here. What is love? All I know is sadness.
All it does is rain here. It rains more. Then, rains more and more. It's so cold...
What is an owner? Will I ever have one?
I see heavy, fast roaring trains pass by. They all walk past me. All I can see is their feet.. they don't even notice me. I guess I'm destined to die all alone. I don't know what trust is either.
My eyes are shutting. I think I'm dying. My eyes are barely open. I can't hear anymore, and my vision is getting blurry. I feel warm hands touch my cold, wet, dirty fur. My eyes close all the way, and I cannot see anymore. I go into a deep sleep.
My eyes open. I wake up on a soft cushion, and I am not freezing anymore. I am warm. I see a tall woman sitting beside me. She looks at me, her eyes holding a look of relief. She picks me up gently, and carries me to the bathroom with her warm, soft arms. Where am I? I hear heavy water start to run, and I struggle away. I squeal once more. I remember the feeling of loneliness and sadness again. She picks me back up, and holds me in the air. She smiles at me and says something that changed my whole life.
''Everything is going to be okay now. Trust me.''
She gently holds me, and releases me in the water. She turns the water off. Now I am calmer. I look at her, confused. Why would anyone want a dog like me? I'm dirty and nasty. I'm not the prettiest dog in the whole world, and I'm stupid. She rubs something on me that feels cold and soapy. The water gets bubbles in it. She pours water on me. I don't hesitate this time because of her words. Could this be trust?
She picks me up, and wraps me in a towel. She rubs the towel all over my body. I feel clean and fresh. I'm not scared now. But, my head was aching and I didn't know why. She sprays perfume on me, and I smell a very good scent. It is much quieter here. There is no sad rain here. There's someone here for me. Is that what an owner is?
She puts me down, and opens the door. She turns off the bathroom light, and then shuts the door behind her after I go out of the room.
I roam around the house, unsure of what to do. I don't even know how I got here, and I don't know where this place is. All I know is that I want to live here. I don't want to live in the lonely, cold, hard rain anymore.
She comes up to me, and picks me up once more. She takes me to a carrier, and then sets me inside of it. She puts a soft, warm blanket in the carrier, and food and water. I finally get to eat? After all of this time, I can eat. I ate the food as fast as I could, eating sloppily, getting food everywhere. Then, I slid my tongue along the water bowl and licked up as much water as I could. I had water all over the fur around my mouth. I heard laughing. I got out, and looked up her. She was smiling, looking at me.
''Angel, come outside.''
She whistled very loud, and clapped her hands. Was this a name? If it was, I liked my new name. Angel. I followed her her, and she opened yet another door. It was outside. The place I had suffered at for so long. Except, this time, there was no sad, lonely rain. It was bright, and beautiful. The grass was so green and fresh. Birds were gathered around a feeder hanged on a tree. There was a stone walkway that led to the front yard gates. Right now, we were standing at the patio. There were chairs, couches, and tables.
She whistled. ''Angel! Come here girl!''
I wagged my tail. I was finally happy. I didn't feel sad anymore. I ran to her excitedly, and pranced on my feet. I barked. She threw a weird, red disc.
''Catch! Get it, Angel!''
I ran as fast as I could, and the disc was on the ground. I picked it up with my mouth, and walked back to her. She took it from my mouth, and then got ready to throw it again.
''Fetch!''
She threw it a shorter distance this time, and not as high in the air. I ran and caught it in my mouth. I ran back to her, and she took it from my mouth once again. She pet me with a smile on her face. It felt so good to be loved after all that time. I was starting to regain my positive feelings. I guess I could call her my owner now.
The night came. We had played catch all this time, and I was barking and wagging my tail playfully. Never had I ever had this much fun. Actually, I had never had fun at all, since I can't remember anything. My head ache went away.
''Angel! Time to go inside!'' she called.
She opened the back door again, and I went inside. Only now had I realized I was tired. Where was I going to sleep?
I heard the door shut, and then she led me to a room. There was a huge bed that made me want to jump in it. There were stuffed dogs on a shelf. She lifted me, and placed me on the bed. I stuck my teeth out, just like she smiled, and I wagged my tail. She smiled at me, and got into the bed. She put a cover over me, and I instantly fell asleep.
Was this all a dream? If it was, I wanted to stay stuck in this dream forever. Being alone was too painful for me.
