Chapter 17

P.O.V/ Kim Austin:

It's been five weeks since the Valentine's Day dance, and it was okay, and I was surprised that Patrick wasn't too bad. He did try to kiss me, but stopped when the music quit playing. After the dance was over, I went to the bathroom and washed my hands. I looked in the mirror and saw Ashley behind me, who knocked me out with a karate chop. I woke up in that unknown factory, and Ashley attempted to cut me in half with that chainsaw, but Mom and Jane intervened, saving me just in time. While I was fighting Ashley with that chain, she caught it and jerked me across the metal table, where I landed on the ground, breaking my wrist. Soon after that, Ashley, Natalie, and Tiffany escaped. Mom, Jane, and Kelly took me to the hospital, where they put me in a red cast that goes down my forearm, stopping a little bit from my elbow. I had landed on my left wrist, not my right one, so I can still use a pencil or pen to write. Today is Monday, March 21, 1983. My birthday is right around the corner on April 18. I'm sitting on the couch with Zeke, watching the TV as it plays the news. I have the same TV set as Kelly does at her house. I hear footsteps and look over at Mom, who is walking from the foyer with a cup of coffee in her hand. She carefully sets her cup on the side table, which has a glass crystal lamp on it, and sits down on the couch. She picks up a soft pack of Marlboro's and pulls one out of the pack. She strikes a black bic lighter, lighting it up. She gets up from the couch, walks in front of the TV, and over to the window. She unlocks it and pulls it up to let the smoke out. She walks back over to the couch and sits down. She is off for the week; she finally got a vacation. She puffs on her cigarette, then says, "How is your arm feeling today?" I said, " It's okay, still pretty tender". Mom reaches for the side table, picking up a bottle that is orange and has a white lid, containing my pain medicine. Since I broke a bone, they suggested I take something stronger for pain. Mom twists the cap and pours out a white 10mg Hydrocodone pill. She hands it to me, and I put it in my mouth, take a drink of my Coke, and swallow it. It's a good thing Mom made breakfast before I took that, because you have to eat before taking those. I hear a horn outside. I get up, pick up my backpack off the floor by the couch, and pet Zeke. I walk over to Mom, and she stands up. I kiss her on the cheek, and she walks me over to the door. I open it, and we walk out on the porch. Mom said, " Have a good day, sweetie". I said " I will". She said, "I love you." I said, " I love you too, Momma". I walk down to Kelly's car, walking around the front of it as I open the door, and Mom waves at Kelly. I get inside and close the door, putting my seatbelt on as Kelly shifts into drive, easing off the clutch as she pulls off and drives down the road. She looked over at my cast and said, " Is your arm getting better?" I said, " Yeah, slowly. It's going to be taken off on the 28th". Kelly said, " Good. I miss you having both hands". She winks at me with a mischievous grin, and I roll my eyes at her playfully. She pulls into the back parking lot of the school and drives down, pulling into a spot. She turns off the car and pulls out the keys, putting them in the pocket of her blue jean jacket. We both open our doors and get out, closing them. We walk around to the back and stand in front of the trunk like we usually do. Kelly is wearing her blue jean jacket, a red t-shirt that says Journey on it with the symbol that looks just like the one I have, a pair of dark high-waisted blue jeans, and her Adidas top tens that are white and blue. I'm wearing my blue jean jacket, a black t-shirt with the Rolling Stones symbol on it, a pair of dark, high-waisted blue jeans, and my black Nike Pegasus. Jane comes walking from Shana's car and stands in front of us. She's wearing her black leather jacket, a plain black t-shirt, a pair of dark high-waisted blue jeans, and her black Chuck Taylors. Jane said, " It's finally starting to warm up". I said, " Yeah, wait until summer, it's gonna be hot as hell". Kelly said, "Yeah, then you'll start showing some skin." She winked at her, and Jane rolled her eyes at the comment. Jason and Kyle exit Roy's truck as it pulls up. They both get out, walking over to us and waving at Roy as he pulls away. Kyle is wearing his new black colored blue jean jacket, a grey t-shirt that says AC DC Back in black in black letters, a pair of dark blue Carpenter blue jeans, and his black Nike Cortez. Jason is wearing his black leather jacket, a grey World Tour of 1980 Journey t-shirt, a pair of dark blue Wrangler jeans, and his black steel-toed boots. As I stand there chatting with Jason and Jane, Kelly and Kyle are making out. Kelly is sitting up on the back of the trunk as Kyle stands between her legs, kissing her as she pulls him close with her hands on the back of his neck. I spot Ashley, Natalie, Tiffany, and Patrick walking up behind Jason and Jane. They hear them and both stand on each side of me. Ashley smiles evilly as she looks down at my cast. She said, " How's the arm?" I said sarcastically, " Like you even care". Ashley said sarcastically, " Yeah, you're right, I don't." She cackled and then said, "'Cause I'm gonna break it again once it heals". Jane said, " I'd like to see you try bitch". Ashley said, " I'll break yours too". I look over at Kelly and Kyle, and they have stopped kissing. Kyle moves over, and Kelly gets down off the trunk, walking over to Ashley. She said, " I'm gonna enjoy hearing you scream when I vanquish you're sorry ass again". Ashley said, " You can't kill me, remember? I'm already dead". Kelly said, " Don't worry, I'll find a way". She winks at her. Later that day, after eating lunch, we sat on the bleachers in the middle. It's Jason, Jane, me, Kelly, and Kyle as we sit there talking. Something hits Jane in the back of the head. She exclaims and looks up at Ashley, Natalie, and Tiffany at the top of the bleachers, sitting there laughing. I see a small rock lying on the ground behind Jane. She rubs her head and moves her hand up, checking to see if she's bleeding, but there is no blood. Jane said, " I swear if she throws another one, I'm gonna beat her ass". Jane exclaims in pain as another rock hits her in the back of the head, puts her hand back there, and pulls it up, seeing a little bit of blood on her hand. She said, "That's it!" She stood up, and Jason stood up, blocking her way. She looked up at him and said, "Jason, please move." He said, " Come on, let's go down on the track. "She scoffed as she looked up at Ashley and them giggling, she flipped them off. We all walk down to the track and start walking. But Ashley, Natalie, and Tiffany end up walking behind us. I'm walking on the end when I feel someone smack my cast as they walk by. I exclaim in intense pain as I stop. Jane is beside me as I'm holding my wrist. She hears laughing, and we look over at Ashley passing by us, looking at us as she cackles evilly. She said " Opps". sarcastically. Jane said, " Fuck you". Ashley stops walking and turns around, looking back at us. She walks up to Jane, standing in front of her. She said to her, " You couldn't handle me". She winks at her. Jane said, " Oh, please, I'd make you my bitch, and you know it". A group of kids walking by says " Ooooo" in unison. Ashley growls as she grabs Jane's right arm, twisting it to the right, making Jane exclaim in pain as she gets on her knees. Ashley is standing very close to her with the front of her pants right in front of Jane's face. Ashley said, " Now who's the bitch??" Jane looked up at her, then punched her in the vagina with her free hand. Ashley exclaims in pain, releasing her. Jane stands up, and Ashley is bent over, holding herself. Jane swings her fist, punching Ashley in the nose, and Ashley falls to the ground on her back. Jane jumps on top of her and starts punching her in the face over and over until Natalie and Tiffany pull her off, slinging Jane into the metal fence in front of the walkway up to the bleachers. Natalie punches Jane in the stomach, then Tiffany does. Kelly swings a punch, hitting Natalie on the jaw, and she stumbles. Ashley and Jane are fighting as Natalie and Tiffany gang up on Kelly. Ashley swings a punch, hitting Jane in the mouth, making blood fly out. Jane tackles Ashley into the black gate that leads into the football field, and they wrestle around on the ground, throwing punches at each other. Kelly has Tiffany on her back as Natalie is swinging punches at her. She hits Kelly in the face, and Kelly knees her in the stomach, making her hit the ground on her knees. Kelly flips Tiffany over her back, and Tiffany lands on her back on the pavement of the track, hitting her head. Natalie goes after Kelly, swinging punches as they fight by the unconscious Tiffany. We hear the sound of teachers yelling for them to stop. A female teacher said, "Break it up, girls!!" Soon, about three female teachers were pulling Natalie and Kelly apart as two male teachers broke up Jane and Ashley on the football field. This time, Nobody was arrested; they got sent to the principal's office, and he suspended them for five days. They can't come back to school until the 28th. Jane got grounded while Kelly got off the hook because Austin doesn't care.
