"I'm sorry, Mark, I think I just want to be friends."
These words, from Jenna's mouth, changed Mark's life and not for the better. In his mind, he had been planning to marry her, maybe have kids, and have a life together. Now he had no plan.
The words had come during one of Mark and Jenna's hangout sessions - Jenna's name for them, as Mark just thought of them as dates. They had been watching a movie, and Mark had built up the courage to ask her if she loved him.
She didn't.
Mark had bailed and gone home quickly after. He spent a few hours sulking around his house, thoughts filled with his heartbreak. But he couldn't be miserable forever; he had a project due and he had to write it this weekend.
Mark finally sat down at his desk and opened his email. Mark was lucky to have gotten into his college as a prestigious hypnosis major, which put him at the top of the social pyramid at his school but also came with lots of work. To be frank, Mark hadn't been paying attention when the project was assigned; thankfully, Ms. Devenshire always emailed her assignments in case students were absent.
After sorting through some junk, he found the email and skipped to the part where Ms. Devenshire actually wrote the assignment.
PROJECT #6: DUE MAY 25
For this assignment, one of the last in the semester, you must find a susceptible hypnosis subject and use one of the inductions we've covered to give them a trigger word to make them fall into a hypnotic trance. You must also be able to wake them up easily.
You MUST inform your subject on what they will be doing. Unwilling hypnosis is illegal. On Monday, May 25, bring your subject in to class and be ready to demonstrate your trigger word. This assignment is worth 25 points based on success of trigger and ease of hypnosis.
See you all on Monday,
Laura Devenshire
Mark read over the email a few times and nodded. This would be somewhat easy. They had practiced inductions and trigger words a million times in class. The only hard part would be finding a willing hypnosis subject that was also suggestible...
Only one person popped into Mark's mind: Jenna.
But after friendzoning him, Mark wasn't sure if Jenna would even show up tomorrow.
But he had no other options, so he texted her:
Hey so are you available on Mon at 11 am? I have a hypnosis thing I need you for
Nothing happened for a few minutes, but then the three telltale dots appeared as Jenna started typing.
Yeah I'm available can you pick me up
Sure thing, I have to do stuff to prepare so can I pick you up at 10
Sounds good
Internally, Mark have a small fistpump. This didn't just mean that Jenna would help him with his project; it also meant that she still wanted to spend time with him. All hope was not lost.
With that, Mark enjoyed the rest of his Sunday and went to bed, ready for the day tomorrow.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Mark woke up just like any other day at 8:30 and took a nice hot shower. He got dressed in skinny jeans and a plain white tee with a Marlins hoodie over it (inherited from his uncle's obsession with the team). He also applied a tiny bit of cologne, so as not to make a bad impression on Jenna. He couldn't help admiring himself in the mirror: Mark was considered a pretty handsome guy. 6'1, naturally muscular, and with a cute mop of brown hair, Mark was sure that other girls would fall head over heels for him. But he only really loved Jenna, and so aside from a few "experiments" with different girls, Mark had never had a real girlfriend.
