Love is madness.
Or so I tell myself.
I always somehow end up in class early. Definitely not to watch Princess Andrea Xusan walk in. Nope. She's the enemy. I mean, sure, on paper we're at peace, but in real life? Hell no. I don't think our lands could be at peace if our lives depended on it.
She walks in, her attention on the phone in her hands. Despite trying to convince myself otherwise, she's beautiful. Dangerously so. Caramel brown hair, stormy gray eyes, ivory skin and a perfect figure. She always dresses in various shades of pink, black or red. Why I notice so many things about her, I don't know.
She's literal moral perfection. And that irks me. She's kind, generous and nice with everyone. Not me though, because we're enemies duh. Younger girls idolize her, other princesses hate her and boys fall at her feet.
What I try not to admire about her is that while she's nice, everyone's still secretly terrified of her. She has that kind of confidence.
Me? I literally scare everyone with my brooding expression. Not my aim though. The only person who I want to scare doesn't give a damn.
"Staring at her Majesty, eh?" mocks Eric, my best friend who won't leave me alone, no matter how much I threaten to kill him. He takes the seat next to me.
"I hate her."
"Sure, sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night."
Andrea takes the seat in front of me, without sparing me a glance. I think she does it simply to annoy me. And it works. She flicks her hair, and it lands on my desk. I narrow my eyes at the back of her head and Eric snickers. If looks could kill, he'd be dead ten times over.
Professor Anthony Moores begins to take attendance. I place my books on the table, responding with a quick "Yes" when my name is called out.
"Remember the project I told you about?" Professor asks. The class mumbles in agreement. Most students in this class are crown princes and princesses, with a lot of work to deal with, kingdom-wise. Which means we don't get projects. Usually.
"You'll be working in pairs for this one," He says before quickly adding, "And I'll be assigning them for you." The class groans collectively. I suddenly have a bad feeling about this. What if he pairs me with Andrea? I smirk. If he does, I'll be sure to give her hell.
"Each pair will be working on a different project, relating to their own Kingdoms, or Empires." The Empire part is for Andrea. The oh-so omnipotent Xusan Empire.
"The core topic will be the same, of course." He pauses for a moment, as if to build up the suspense. Everyone already knows what the topic is, no one just wants to admit it to themselves, myself included.
"World War III." The silence in the class is deafening. You could hear the drop of sweat that falls from Professor's forehead. He's nervous, and he should be. He just assigned us a project on the topic that took at least one loved person from each of us forever.
Normally Andrea would break the ice, but she's dead silent. Her father was killed in the war, allegedly by mine. Now you see why we don't get along. Everyone is glancing nervously at Andrea and me, expecting either, or worse, both of us to react. But I don't. My face is stone cold, an expression I've perfected over the years. And I know, without having to look, that Andrea is wearing the same expression. It's the one thing we have in common- keeping our true emotions hidden.
Professor clears his throat awkwardly. "So. Your pairs." He rattles off a few names, then looks at me nervously, then Andrea. I know what's going to happen, but I look back at him blankly. I don't know if it's just me, but the tension in the room rises, I can feel it.
"Andrea and Michael." The class is silent once again. I don't react. I can see Andrea clenching her fists hard.
"You both will be documenting everything that you went through, everything that you saw and felt," Professor says, sounding confident. I'm sure he's trembling on the inside. I wonder what father will say when he finds out. He'll probably suggest I spy on Xusan to bring it down. Andrea's mother will be more forgiving, I'm sure. Which is probably why she isn't throwing a tantrum now. Honestly, neither of us has the power to. Being next in line for the throne in the two most powerful kingdoms, neither of us has much of a choice when it comes to stuff like this, which is probably going to be used as a publicity stunt.
"All of your projects will be published for the public to see, so make sure it's presentable." Called it. "Since the portion for your midterms is completed, every class after this will be for your project. I expect ground work as well. This class has now been shifted to your last period, for your convenience. Report to class for attendance, then you can either stay here, or you can discuss at the library." Everyone begins murmuring. "I would very much like to see an outline of what you plan to do in a week."
Professor looks at his watch. "You have about ten minutes, so pair up with your partner and get to know each other and break the ice."
