Josie had just finished her meal at her favorite chinese restaurant. The waiter gave her a fortune cookie along with the bill.
"Thank you." She said as she sat the bill off to the side as she opened the wrapper to the cookie. She cracked the cookie open like she did when she was a child and read the fortune cookie. Her face turned pallid as she read the cookie in her head. "Your life is in danger. Say nothing to anyone. You must leave the city immediately and never return. Repeat: say nothing."
"This is a joke, right?" She thought to herself. "It has to be." Still, she didn't say a word. She paid for her meal and hurried home to her small apartment.
She wasn't sure what to do. How could she leave her hometown? How could she leave the only place she'd ever known? "I guess it doesn't matter if I'm dead though, does it?" She wondered aloud.
Josies' cat, Daisy a black and white maine coon, rubbed her body against her legs. She looked down at her beloved cat. "Come on, Daisy, we've gotta get outta here." She scooped the cat into her arms and walked to her bedroom. She sat the cat onto her bed. She bent over and pulled out a large suitcase. She ran back and forth between her dresser and her suitcase, trying to fit as much as she could into it.
She quickly zipped up her suitcase and rushed to the living room to get a cat carrier. She gently placed Daisy into the carrier. She gathered her things: suitcase, cat carrier, a backpack with her phone, charger, and a few other things. She took her phone in her hand and looked around. She called her best friend, Jayce. She had to tell him she was leaving.
"Hello?" His raspy voice called out through the phone.
"Hey, it's me. Look, I need to get outta town for a little bit. I don't have time to explain. I'm not even supposed to call anyone, but I couldn't just leave without telling you." She said all in one breath. She took her keys in her hand as she was heading for the door.
"Josie, are you in trouble? What's going on?" His voice was laced with concern. They were extremely close. Most people even think they're related.
"I'll tell you when I get to the airport. I gotta go." She hung up the phone and hastened out the door, locking it behind her. Once she got to the bottom floor, she called herself a car.
A man in a coat approached her. Her heart began to race. She could feel that something wasn't right. The only thought that was going through her mind was, "Am I going to die right now?"
He removed his hands from his pockets, revealing a knife. "You shouldn't have called your friend."
She tried to scream, but no sound came out. She was literally frozen in fear.
The cold metal of the knife pierced her skin. Pain surged through her body. A scream finally escaped her as the knife was pulled out of her flesh. She placed her hand on the wound on her abdomen. All her attention was on the blood that poured from her wound. When she finally looked back up, the man was gone.
She didn't know how, but she somehow ended up on the ground. A crowd began to form around her. She didn't know how long she'd been laying there. It had to have been at least thirty minutes. Her vision began to blur and the ringing in her ears was building. Soon, everything went black and she couldn't feel anything.
Josie jolted awake. She sat up and looked around the room. Her room looked normal. She looked at her abdomen and there was no stab wound. She let out a sigh of relief and wiped the sweat off her forehead.
She grabbed her phone off her nightstand and checked the time. 2:26 a.m. She unlocked the phone and called Jayce. "Please pick up..."
"Hello?"
"Hey." She smiled at the sound of his voice.
"Are you okay?" He said, voice showing concern.
"Yeah, I am now." She sighed, feeling a lot better. "Sorry for waking you up. Um, I'll call you in the morning. Good night."
"Good night." Although he was confused, he was happy to help and go back to bed.
She let out one last sigh of relief as Daisy jumped up onto her bed and rubbed against her face. Josie smiled and gave her a pet. "It was just a dream... just a dream." She said as she laid back down and went back to sleep.
