I think it would be cool if he got attacked by some huge sea creature and it left him with a very damaged body, a torn face and blind eye(well, mostly blind), and no right arm. So he has this strap on wooden arm (made from an old sunken ship) to just act as a way to help him swim. I also think he probably lives in a more deep, darker and open parts of the ocean, so his eyes are kinda sensitive to light. He does a lot on his own, most of the time refusing help when presented to him. When he is suddenly dragged up into this group of very sweet and overly chaotic merpeople, he's kinda startled by it. Over time he gets used to it and soon adds his own chaos.
