Lost But Found
''But I want to!'' I complained.
''It wouldn't be safe.'' said my ''evil'' great-aunt.
''Pleeasee, Aunt Beatris!'' My little brother, who was standing next to me, pleaded.
''No, Amber, you are only 7, and your brother, 5. You can't just go to the park alone.''
''Fineee...'' I said. ''Come on, Drew, we'll go play some where else.''
***
''Amby, Amby, come here!!'' My brother pulled me out of my memory. I had said that exactly 2 weeks ago, not knowing that that was going to be my last full day inside a home.
I rushed over to my brother's side.
''Look, Amby. That a HUGE bug!'' he said.
''Ugly too.'' I added with a giggle.
''Yeah!'' He laughed while pointing to the bug.
''Come on, lets go back to the tree.''
''Ok.'' He said while grabbing my hand.
We then skipped to a medium sided tree that looked like it used to be a tree-house. Some how, we had survived in this tree since we ran away.
We still are close to a neighbor-hood, so whenever we got hungry, we would go to one of the houses and do our best sad-hungry-kid faces. We got so much food that way!
''Amby, I'm going to bed.'' Drew told me.
''Okay.'' I said. ''I'll come tuck you in in a second.''
I walked over and grabbed the blanket that we had brought from hom...
No, not home! I thought correcting myself.
From Aunt Beatris' house.
Aunt Beatris was a very rich, grumpy, old, wrinkly woman. She had taken care of us ever since out parents died when I was 5, but only because she was our only other relative.
I still remember how horrible that first week was. After a while, my brother and I just started ingnoring her and camping out in our shared room.
An owl hooted.
''Amby, Amby!! Is there a monster??'' He asked.
I walked over to where my brother was lying. I put the blanket gently over him.
''No, it's just an owl.'' I replied.
I leaned down and kissed his forehead.
''I'll be right here. I'll protect you.'' I said reassuring him and myself.
I sat down beside him.
'' 'Night'' I heard him say, real sleepily.
''Good-night’’ I said.
