A couple of days later
"Figli, the cause of this meeting is concerning all of you. One of our most important associates and a close friend has asked for your sister's hand in marriage. I have already spoken with Bianca, and she has decided to accept the proposal. The man in question is Lorenzo Romano. The wedding will be held, of course, after Caterina's if everything goes according to plan. Now, I want you all to help your sister with the preparations and to get her acclimated with what is expected of her when she becomes the wife of a Don." Padre's booming voice is finite as always and leaves little room for disagreement. His words were those of a boss more than those of a Family member, but this is not only a Family happening. It's a job transaction too.
(Father) (Boss)
I glance around the room at my siblings. My brothers are all standing, looking at Father, barely breathing like the obedient soldiers they were raised to be. Dante doesn't seem surprised at all hearing this news. As the underboss, he probably already knew of this even before my sister heard. I wouldn't put it past them to have thought of this before the man even suggested it, as a possible outcome for us. Bastiano looks happy for Bianca, as he always is for anything that concerns our futures. He is very supportive, or maybe he doesn't care enough to be frustrated. Either way, it works for me. Of course, the one looking mad out of the three of them is Filippo, his jaw locked and his shoulders drawn up tight, but that was to be expected. He, on the far end, is not supporting at all when the discussion steers close to such mutters.
Mom has her hands wrapped around Bianca who is nodding slowly at what Padre is saying, like she is just now learning of this. I worry my lip. This doesn't seem right. She's said yes but doesn't look half as excited as she'd be expected to. I thought she'd be happier for something like this, and I know stuff my Family doesn't. Rosalyn is sitting in front of Dante and even though there is a language barrier it seems like she understands what is going on because she is smiling at my sister, but her brows are furrowed. She knows something is wrong too. Damn... Caterina, as always, isn't paying us any attention, looking at her perfectly manicured nails and the engagement ring adorning her finger. I swear she is obsessed with that thing!
"Ex-fucking-cuse me? What the fuck are you on about? Are you out of your bloody mind?!" Filippo shouts at our Father and I suppress a groan.
"Filippo, speak better to your father!" Madre chastises from her place near the couch, still cuddling my sister, but sending daggers to my brother.
(Mother)
"Are you all insane? We all know his father! Are you seriously letting your daughter enter that fucked up family? He'll kill her!" He is taught as a string, hand drawn and signaling to an imaginary object, his voice breaking the glass windows from the intensity. Padre seems calm instead like he expected this behavior from Filippo.
My Mother on the other hand would never accept that her son and husband quarreled in this way, fearing for the worst. She is accustomed to these scenes, but she never learned to expect them. She made her point after the doctor gave Padre his last check-up results that he was not to be aggravated. His heart is weak. Well, as weak as it can get, but he still goes to the warehouses and does 'his work'. Meaning, he tortures people and spends hours upon hours stressing about everything. But Signora Lucia is serious about him taking it easy when she has any control over it. Padre is careless, just like my brother's -and especially Dante-, but he loves Mom too much to let go and leave her alone in this world, as he always says.
(Mrs. Lucia)
"Lucia, let him get it out of his system. Filippo, I do know who Leonardo is and how dangerous he could be. As I know who Lorenzo is, and I trust him to take care of your sister the way I and you and your brothers take care of her. Please stop trying to hold back your sisters from experiencing life, figlio. You are not helping them in any way, instead, you are letting your fear blind you and your paranoia keeps you from doing anything with your own life." Padre's words sound brutal and too honest in my ears. Sure, Filippo is a bit paranoid about our safety, but that's not reason enough to tell him he hasn't done something to be proud of. Dad only makes matters worse this way.
