18th April 1941.
2300 Hours.
Button House stood tall and quiet, the dark night-sky surrounding it like a haze only few could see through. Almost everyone was asleep inside, tucked in their beds and dozing off, a little amount thinking twice. The Captain still stood looking out of a window, thinking and humming, his head was racing with different ideas, none of them sounded too bad.Him and Havers had become quite close, the Lieutenant had even chosen not to transfer himself to the frontier campaign down in North Africa. Maybe he realised Tunisia wasn't exactly the nicest of places to go during summer, not that that had stopped most other people.
The sound around the house was silent almost, the small buzzing of the pipes and the snoring of the sleeping people, the breathing of the few awake. The Captain had gotten quite thirsty, so he'd begun his beeline towards the stairs.
''Lady Button!'' Kitty sing-songed down the stairs, trailing behind the very much alive Captain. ''This one's still moving about! What'd you think he's doing?'' She continued shouting, still getting no response from Fanny. She did, however, receive a very clear voice from just below her foot, causing her to stop chasing the Captain.
''Ah, hello Kitty!'' A head said, looking up at the woman from the side of his eyes, '' You would mind, ahem. Picking me up again would you?''
''Oh of course not Humphrey, oh it's such a joy seeing you around these days, I haven't spoken to you in days!'' The excitable girl talked, picking the head up and cradling it like a young child in her arms.
''So nice of you Kitty, can you take me to the library maybe?'' He spoke too, polite as ever, not wanting to upset anyone.
This was Humphrey, the headless ghost, you can see his headless body walking around at times, not all that often, it can't speak and can't really communicate because it has no senses other than being able to feel. The head though had all the personality, he spoke, couldn't move, but was a great conversationalist and a lovely tutor for the younger ghosts that came and went.
Once Kitty and Humphrey had arrived in the library, they didn't look around, didn't need to really, Kitty dumped him with a sweet smile and went, ''Have a nice few days Humphrey, good luck!'' She chirped, skipping off the go and find the living man again.
The Captain drank from a cup, trying not to make too much noise due to the many people sleeping around the house. He walked around for a bit, coming across the library. He didn't go into the library very much, there was nothing he needed from there. He walked in, looking at the stacked shelves in awe. A few windows sat behind some shelves, a few even peeking out from behind a shelf or two. The books were all different sorts of shades of green, purple, white, brown, black and blues. All the colours were dull, of course, the Captain liked it like that though, too much made his eyes hurt.
It took him a moment to notice the small noise in the corner of the room. An armchair was tucked away in the faraway right-corner, right next to a shelf, a table next to it with what looked like a mug of cold tea on it. On the chair, Lieutenant Havers was curled up with a limp book on his lap. He was breathing softly, still in his full uniform, but he looked comfortable. An orange light came from the table, a candle light lit up one side of his face. Now the Captain felt bad, like he was interrupting something.
He slowly walked out of the room, his cup of water in hand, "Goodnight," the Captain whispered softly.
''Well that was sweet." Humphrey said to himself, he didn't ever have much to do so talking to himself kept him busy, however he did jump when someone responded.
''Quite so, I have had my eye on these two for a while now, there are ever so lovely, what do you think Humphrey?'' Thomas was stood with his hands clasped to his chest, his eyes were practically shining.
Humphrey sighed,
''That's a tad bit creepy mate.''
