The full moon overlooking the Kanto region shone brightly in the night sky. Like a great pearl in a sea of deep purple and dark blue, it watched the sleeping inhabitants like a watchful and protective parent. Not a creature stirred. Even those who called the night their home offered little resistance to its calmness.

Several miles away from the City of Viridian, in an isolated patch of the forest forgotten by man and pokemon alike, sat a creature as unknown to the world as it was legendary. The small pink creature flew through the sky, its gentle coos ringing through the night as it danced through the clouds and sang songs to the overlooking stars.

This creature was Mew, a beast that had become a Legend and myth to humans and pokemon alike. A creature of unimaginable power whose will and intelligence had guided countless societies and individuals throughout hundreds of years of its life.

It didn't seem to care much about that, though, fully intending to spend the quiet and calm night amongst the stars. It was lost in thought when it saw a familiar face, well, not face in a traditional sense. The Mew was far too high up in the sky to register something as uninteresting as a being's face. Especially a human, who Mew always thought looked too similar to one another to try to tell them apart.

But it was the presence it recognized. As a psychic type, one of the most potent psychics to ever draw breath, Mew was intuned with the life force of every living creature. It couldn't tell someone by their face, but it could read their hearts to recognize friends.

Every living thing had a unique and one-of-a-kind heart. It was the thing Mew loved most about people and Pokémon the most. No two of them were alike.

So when the Mew felt the pulsating heart of one of its favorite humans, it became excited. It raced through the purple clouds of the night sky before lowering itself to the tree line of the woods. It was exciting. It had been years since the Mew had run into this particular human. It felt like the years it had been separated from this human, and his journey had been far more boring than the years could have been otherwise if Mew had kept a closer eye out for the black-haired child.

The Mew popped its head out of a particularly tall tree as it watched the smoking embers of a once roaring fire to find the sleeping form of his favorite human and his loyal Pikachu companion.

Ash Ketchum looked...different. Mew knew that humans didn't evolve the same way pokemon did. But the young man before him looked as much like the boy Mew remembered as he looked far different.

Had it been so long since Mew had last seen this human? It wondered how much the boy had changed.

Mew closed his eyes in concentration, feeling the world slow to a crawl as he touched the young man's subconscious mind. Mew swam through the boy's thoughts and dreams, enjoying seeing the happy memories the man had made over the years. The faces of the friends he had made and the adventures he had taken part in. Mews's eyes widened as they saw the boy grow into a man worthy of being the Chosen one of Arceus and a man who still had far more to give to the world.

Mew always knew his favorite human was unique.

But there was also a sense of sadness in these memories. A sense of longing that clouded many of the thoughts Mew could read. Mews' favorite human missed his friends.

Life had gotten in the way of many of his friendships. Their own destinies and dreams pulled more and more away from him as he aged, and the young man felt the weight of his isolation. But Mew had a sinking suspicion.

Mew felt the world differently than any other creature who lived in Arceuses world. Yet, as Mew reached out to the faces he recognized and those he didn't know from the young man's dream, he felt an equal feeling of longing radiating from each one.
