A few more people wake up.
"Look," mohawk boy tries standing, "I don't think there's a way of telling, if we've only got the time. But I don't want to go through this all again another ten times with another ten people so I say we wake the rest – "
Sloane interrupts at once. "There is no way I'm waking – "
"I guess it would be better to tell everybody at once," Astrid chimes in.
" – Okay! Wakey-wakey everybody!" He stands up and begins clapping his hands, grinning. A lot of groans come next. "Come on, get up! Everyone get up! You've been drugged but there's nothing to worry about, we've all slept for days."
I try standing up too, shakily holding the rail that runs along the interior of the elevator for support. Everyone else opens their eyes, rubbing their faces and looking around in confusion. Chatter rises and questions fill the air at once.
The mohawk boy, Sloane, Ethan and Astrid meet me in my corner. "Well blondie?" He looks at me.
"Yes Mohawk? Don't look at me, you woke them up." I say and Astrid nods, the colour drained from her face.
"Think you're the funny one do you? I distinctly remember you declaring that you didn't want to go through it again with ten different people," Sloane adds.
"I said we should wake them up, not that I was going to give them a presentation. And I don't know... do you think I'm the funny one?"
"Do you even have a name?"
He leans closer to Sloane with a smirk. "Oh wouldn't you like to know."
"Excuse me!" A tall boy nearly stumbles into me with the force of all the others racing around. "I'm so sorry," he looks around at all of us, "Logan. That's my name." Then he glances to the door behind, "is that a toilet? Aren't we in an elevator? Who are you all by the way? You guys seem the most relax out of everyone here."
"We're all strangers," says Ethan, then lists our names, excluding the mohawk boy who speaks next,
"And we aren't relaxed."
Sloane pushes though, and I step aside, watching. She places her hand on the door, pushing it open to reveal a large room home to five toilet stalls, and sinks.
"Huh." Astrid says.
Ethan grabs his forearms. "Do you think this is a real elevator? It can't be with toilets, it would be scientifically impossible to carry them."
"Maybe it's part of it," the tall boy replies, then chuckles lightly, "Yes! I'm part of a prank!"
"Oi tall one," Sloane starts, "did you forget the part where we've all been drugged. Drugged. It's a serious crime you know, it's not a joke, even if someone thinks they're pulling a prank."
"Oh come on," mohawk boy intervenes, "don't tell me you all actually believe this?"
"So we haven't been drugged?" Ethan questions shyly.
I sigh, then glance towards the 15 other kids in the elevator type room. Some stand there isolated with knitted brows. Others have already made accomplices, and some are even crying, panicking, and a girl with curly brown hair plies at the closed sliding doors to open, crying, and of course being unsuccessful.
Claustrophobia.
"What do we do?" Astrid asks.
"Listen up!" I shout, surprising myself. I have always considered myself to be a follower, but now it has dawned on me that I could create an entirely different personality, now that I am in a room full of strangers, be anyone I want to be. Except Spider-Man – that isn't humanly possible. Bringing myself back to a now silent elevator, with all eyes staring at me, I continue. "Okay I have no idea who any of you are, but it looks like we are, in fact, stuck in an elevator. My guess is that this is all some misunderstanding or some sick prank." I twist back to the wall behind me, finding the emergency button.
"Press it!" Calls an eager voicefrom the group. And I do.
